ChatGPT has now a big problem.
Researchers at Oxford and Cambridge exposed a massive threat to large language models.”
They call it “model collapse."
Internet ecosystem is rapidly changing, and generative AI will soon contribute much of the text found online. This forces us to consider what happens to future iterations like gpt-n when they are trained on data scraped from the web that was already generated by an llm.
According to the research, indiscriminately using model-generated content in training causes "irreversible defects" in the resulting ai. the model loses the "tails of the original content distribution." in other words, it begins to forget the creative, fringe, and unique nuances of actual human writing, collapsing into a repetitive echo chamber.
This isn't just a chatgpt issue.. the researchers built theoretical intuition showing this collapse is ubiquitous across learned generative models, occurring in large language models as well as in variational autoencoders and gaussian mixture models.
Tech companies rely on scraping the internet for large-scale data to build smarter models. However, the paper warns that if we want to sustain the benefits of training on web data, model collapse must be taken seriously.
Ultimate takeaway? data collected from genuine human interactions is going to become increasingly valuable in a web filled with ai content.
Autism might be more prevalent among college students than previously thought - "about half of high schoolers with autism continue on to college, but only four percent of these register with the school’s disability services office."

The president and foreign minister of the same regime that sent these 5 men in New York City to kill me are right now walking the streets of New York under protection.
They should be arrested and face accountability not red carpets.
Those responsible for transnational repression and assassination plots must not be treated as normal diplomats.
Madam High Representative, before the diplomacy, look at these faces. @kajakallas
These women were blinded by the Iranian regime's snipers for the crime of protesting the killing of Mahsa Jina Amini, for showing a little bit of their hair. This is the leader you just sat with.
Thank you for raising the executions and domestic repression. It matters enormously when more than 70 people remain at imminent risk of execution for protesting.
But the Iranian people deserve to hear the answer. What did he say to you? We all know he denies the January massacre of peaceful protesters. He is very good at normalizing a murderous regime that blinded these women simply for demanding their basic rights.
So please tell us:
Did he make any concrete commitment to halt executions and protect the innocent women and men currently facing death sentences?
And please create space to hear directly from the dissidents, women's rights defenders, former prisoners, and the families who live with the consequences of these policies every single day. They are the real voice of Iran.
“Literally everybody.”

2024 study: One standard deviation increase in doctor quality reduces patient mortality risk by 12.2%.
Question: What's the difference in the quality of white (or Asian) medical school matriculants and black medical school matriculants?
Answer: About one standard deviation.
Mayor Mamdani, you said war criminals who set foot in New York should be arrested.
Good news. One is in New York city this week.
The president of the Islamic Republic is coming to the United Nations, right here in New York.
He heads the regime that massacre innocent protesters. They gunned down unarmed protesters in the streets, hanged our children, and sent its agents to Brooklyn to kidnap and kill a New Yorker.
That New Yorker is me. The FBI files and federal indictments are public. Look them up.
If you have the courage to talk about arresting those responsible for crimes against humanity, start with the man sleeping five miles from your office.
Are you willing to act, Mayor? Or do Iranian lives not count?
Turnout Was Inflated by 17%, United Russia’s Vote by 23% — Experts Estimate
According to calculations by Petr Zhizhin, based on the election data he analyzed, Russia’s actual turnout was around 40%, while United Russia received about 35% of valid ballots.
Official figures reported by the CEC were significantly higher:
📊 Official turnout — 57%
🐻 United Russia — 58%
Based on these estimates, turnout was inflated by around 17 percentage points, while United Russia’s result was increased by around 23% relative to the estimated number of valid ballots.
Electoral expert Roman Udot @romanik_ notes that the use of "administrative resource" in Russian elections has traditionally been estimated at around 15–20%.

We are watching Barbie the movie…
And let’s put something straight:
Whoever thinks there are no meaningful differences between men and women clearly didn’t have a boy or a girl – a son or a daughter – two completely different species.
Give a boy a doll and he turns it into a weapon or an engine.
Give a girl a truck and she gives it a name and a family.
Nobody taught them this. You were in the room the whole time.
And it goes far beyond toys.
The boy tests the limit – of the furniture, the rules, and you. He needs to know where the wall is, and he finds it by walking into it.
The girl reads the room. She knows who is upset before anyone has said a word, and she is already doing something about it.
One looks for the edge of the world.
The other looks after the people in it.
Both are necessary.
That is the part the theory most often misses.
A civilization needs the one who goes out and the one who holds it together. It gets into trouble when it decides that only one of them counts as a real person.
One afternoon of actually being a parent dismantles an entire library of theories.
And then notice who wrote the library.
Look carefully at these images.
Twenty-five years ago, we Iranians took to the streets after 9/11. We lit candles. We mourned the victims. We chanted against terrorism.
We did not need anyone to explain terrorism to us.
We had lived it. We knew what it looked like.
We knew what it meant when innocent people become targets simply because extremists have declared them enemies.
Twenty-five years later, I am here in America, and it breaks my heart to see that defeating terrorism is still not treated as a common human cause. Instead, even terrorism has been dragged into partisan politics.
And what troubles me most is watching parts of the Western left offer excuses, romanticize, or even express solidarity with forces such as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and the Islamic Republic instead of standing unequivocally with the people who have suffered from their violence.
Terrorism does not become resistance because you like its political slogan.
Believe me, a terrorist does not become a freedom fighter because his victims belong to the “wrong” side of your politics.
On September 11, 2001, ordinary Iranians understood something very simple: the victims deserved our solidarity, and the terrorists deserved our condemnation.
That principle should not be controversial 25 years later.
You can oppose war. You can criticize governments. You can disagree fiercely about foreign policy. But there should never be a left-wing terrorism and a right-wing terrorism. There is terrorism and there are its victims.
Twenty-five years ago, Iranians lit candles for Americans.
Today, from America, I still believe in the same principle:
Stand with the victims.
Stand against terrorism.
No excuses. No double standards.
