@zenx@Sathish Problem is, in our zeal to “worship” nature we make all sorts of offerings like flowers, agarbatti, oil lamps - all of which are brought in plastic bags. All these add to the degradation. The bags end up being thrown around.
Why cant our worship be just silent reverence.
On the occasion of #WorldEnvironmentDay, commemorating the historic Stockholm Conference of 1972, we have to remind ourselves of the #publictrustdoctrine that recognizes that natural resources belong for the benefit of everybody. Government’s role is to preserve and protect these resources and ensure they are not privatised or limited in any manner.
Where natural environment in Indian cities is fast deteriorating, weakening the capabilities for urban growth, Pune has the last remaining hills that are quintessential for water sustainability. #VetalTekdi is the highest natural point of the city, spanning over 2000acres, rich in biodiversity, containing a quarry wetland and dense man-made forest. The hill has no official protection, except that a part of it is a reserved forest area. It’s protected by common citizens for over four decades, who have a strong sense of place attachment to tekdi.
Time and again thousands have come on the road to protect Vetal Tekdi and resist mindless construction projects. The last rally was as early as 2023 April when 5000 ple walked in rain to oppose a hasty construction tender by PMC for the #BalbhartiPaudPhata road project. @VTBKS_Pune was the outcome of that.
Battles to save the tekdi have gone till the Apex Court and even the https://t.co/GbpTQSRZT6 has recognised the environmental importance of this hill for Pune. It hasn’t given any green light to the road project but instead has asked for deeper assesment of ita environmental impact.
@PMCPune however, looks at the hill as an undeveloped parcel of land that can be made available to builders. It has wntirely disowned its role as a guardian of natural respurces. Transport projects proposed on the hill are not solutions but instead they are going to create serious irreversible resource problems for the city.
A simple journalistic investigation testing PMC’s claims proves how unworthy these projects are! Read this article by @Salonee_TOIPune

Government engineers, babus and inspection officers in India are even bigger terrorists than Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. These people kill more innocent people every year than they do.
The River Wye has just made UK history.
For the first time, an entire river catchment has been formally recognised as a living ecosystem with rights - including the right to flow, thrive, regenerate, and be free from pollution.
It's a major victory for nature.
@EMauk14@AlexTran677026 Indeed interesting if true. But Oliver Stone was “interested” enough to eventually make a movie on The Doors.
Jim Morrison gone way too soon.
