When Charlie came to Lubbock for a tour stop in 2024 at @TPUSAatTTU , he said that West Texas “is one of the last bastions of how Texas used to be and what the future of Texas should really look like.”

This stuck with me because for one, it’s true. And also, it was encouraging that an outsider who’d traveled all over the country recognized that what most West Texans know to be true but oftentimes are too afraid or don’t care enough to say it.

Southern apathy is a real thing. However, southern grit and can-do mentality is too.

If the nation goes as Texas goes, West Texas leads the nation. No one is coming to save us. It is up to us to get involved, stay rooted, and lead with grit. I hope Charlie’s speech will re-ignite that mentality within you like it did for me.
