The gold window was shuttered in August 1971 by...Richard Nixon, a president that Postliberals and NatCons including Jon consider to be a hero and model president.
It was shuttered against the advice of free-market economists who favored the gold standard.
When debasing the dollar, Nixon also simultaneously enacted a sweeping agenda of tariffs and price controls - policies that NatCons support and wish to revive today.
Free market economists also opposed those tariffs and price controls.
Nixon's policies - enacted against the advice of free-market economists at the time - triggered multiple inflationary episodes that persisted for the rest of the decade.
Free market economists such as Milton Friedman had to clean up that inflationary mess in the decade that followed.
And yet "neoliberalism" - a fake pejorative term for free-market economists and specifically to Friedman - is somehow to blame for this legacy?
