Did you face Lord Chaos?
The one and only Godfather of real-time dungeon crawlers: Dungeon Master
Developed by FTL Games and released in 1987, it was a groundbreaking real-time RPG that revolutionized the genre. It featured pseudo-3D graphics and innovative mechanics like skill improvement through use and repetition (rather than traditional level progression).
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve played this. It simply doesn’t get old. You assemble a party of four heroes to descend into a multi-level dungeon, solving puzzles, fighting monsters in real time, and retrieving the Firestaff to defeat Lord Chaos.
Dungeon Master has a truly immersive vibe and quite a nerve-wrecking and tense real-time gameplay. I think it's fair to say that it paved the way and heavily influenced later titles such as Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore, and Black Crypt.
It's a timeless classic, often (and rightfully) hailed as one of the best RPGs ever.
