Another 400 people facing redundancy, and up to 100 more shops going from high streets in the UK and Ireland.

Well over 500 shops closed in a year, with these ones, the 132 announced by Betfred, and the 278 that William Hill has closed in the last 12 months. Entain has confirmed closures but not the number.

There were more than 9,000 betting shops in 2014 and around 16,000 at the 1960s peak. The Gambling Commission counted 5,669 last December. On this trajectory we go below 5,000. Ministers talk about tackling "proliferation" in planning rules; the sector is in retreat.

Retail has been declining for years. The acceleration is new, and operators are explicit about why: a £1.1bn tax rise on the regulated industry that they are mitigating by cutting the estate.

@CarstenJung, in October you told the Treasury Committee that industry warnings about shops closing were unlikely to come true, and that employment effects would be limited. Ten months on, over 500 shops are gone or going.

Do you stand by that assessment? And will you oppose further increases?

Betting being looped in like this is disgraceful. Bettings shops are the windows for highly regulated, mass employing, and usually publicly listed businesses that fund significant amounts of tax to government.

Highlights how poorly the industry, especially racing, has been able to engage positively with government in the UK for far too long. Horrible to see.

Mentioning legal and regulated betting shops (the hub of the community for generations like pubs) alongside dodgy businesses is a strange choice by the PM.

Betting shops are licensed, regulated, taxed, and employ tens of thousands of people.

Grouping them with “dodgy businesses” isn’t a serious description of a regulated sector.

It’s also aimed at the wrong target. Betting shops: 8,822 → 5,872 over the decade. Adult gaming: 1,610 → 1,502. Barbers: 2,953 → 18,078. Takeaways: 2,882 → 13,478.

Whatever has reshaped the high street, it isn’t gambling premises. And with each new announcement, more jobs are lost.
