Apparently Donald Trump has a new advisor on trade and it’s none other than Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison.

I've seen a lot of people saying the Mavericks traded Luka so that the new ownership group could move the team to Las Vegas, but that's not going to happen.

1. If the new ownership group wanted to crush the fanbase and kill all interest, they would have traded for a laundry list of draft picks, not a top-10, win-now player like Anthony Davis.

2. The Adelson family already owns about $20 billion in Las Vegas Sands stock, providing them plenty of exposure to gambling. However, the Adelson family is also actively moving business out of Las Vegas. The company sold its Las Vegas casinos several years ago and now primarily operates resorts in Asia.

3. Dallas (5th) is a much larger media market than Las Vegas (40th), and the Adelson/Dumont families only bought the team because the plan was to build a mixed-use development (with a casino) around the arena.

4. The NBA isn't going to sacrifice a huge expansion fee, potentially $5-6 billion or more, for Dallas to move to Las Vegas instead.

5. The expansion process is further along than many people realize, although some current NBA owners are worried about revenue-share dilution.

TLDR: This may have been a dumb trade, but it wasn't a 4D chess move to relocate the team to Las Vegas.

Occam's razor tells us the simplest explanation is usually the most likely, which is what happened here.
