"Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen Jr., was the first black Marine Corps pilot to the rank of three-star general. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his performances on 64 combat missions in Korea. He also had a tour of duty in Vietnam, commanding a tactical air squadron in more than 250 missions followed in 1968. He received the Purple Heart for being wounded when he had to eject because his plane was struck by anti-aircraft fire." General Petersen passed away in 2015.
