Very brief overview:
Card sorting
Ask people to group cards into categories, and use the results to guide your information architecture design.
Types
- Closed card sorts
- Hybrid card sorts
- Open card sorts
Setting up your card sort:
1. Set up a time limit for your activity
2. Arrange the space
3. Ask your users to talk aloud during the sessions
Running a moderated card sort:
1. Consider starting with a slide deck that explains what the goal of the activity is,
2. If this is an in-person open card sort, encourage participants to combine categories, rename the categories and topics, and set aside the cards that they think do not belong.
3. Thank your participants
Remote unmoderated sorting sessions:
1. Consider the cognitive load on the participant.
2. Prepare the cards according to the software instructions.
3. If a comment box is available, urge participants to use the field to record any observations or questions
4. 3. Thank your participants
Journey mapping
Map out the userโs journey when using a product on service to better understand whatโs working well and whatโs not.
Understand your users
Before journey mapping, itโs helpful to complete preliminary user research to understand the needs and motivations of your users.
- User interviews to learn directly from individual users about their relevant experiences
- Usability testing to understand how users currently use your service or product
- Empathy mapping to build empathy for your users by visualizing what they say, do, think, and feel
- Diary studies to take a deep look at the user experience over time by asking participants to capture their activities through words, photos, and/or videos
Steps:
- Define the scope
- Decide on journey phases or keep it open
- Test your map with examples
- Create a facilitation guide
- Prep work
- Introduce the activity
- Guide participants through the activity
- Retrospective
Usability testing
Evaluate the usability of a product by asking participants to complete tasks and then observing their behaviour.
Prep work
- Decide what to test
- Write tasks and scenarios
- Identify your audience
- Decide on moderated or unmoderated testing
- Pick a location and technology
- Recruit participants
- Facilitate the study
- Debrief and analyse results
