@tcampomanes The stakeholders divided over ~75 validators always decide what will happen to the network. This is nothing new and part of the protocol. You have the voice, the validators are the mouthpiece.
About the Virtue situationβ¦
I've spoken directly with one of the affected users (likely one of the larger positions impacted), and hearing their experience firsthand made one thing clear: there's a real person who lost real funds to an exploit, and it sucks.
That's why, morally, I support fully restoring the victims positions as if the hack never happened. I don't want to live in a digital world where attackers simply get away with it. If we have a legitimate path to make the victims whole, we should take it.
However, that plan may require a protocol-level change with far heavier implications than it might seem at first glance, potentially even violating the core principles of an immutable ledger.
Regardless, Cream will stand for doing what is morally right over what is currently technically feasible or strictly "good" for the network.
Furthermore, validators voting power comes directly from the stake delegated to us. If Validator A votes for Plan A and Validator B votes for Plan B, the delegated stake will ultimately determine which path wins out. It is a good thing that all options are available for a vote.
Ultimately, the hope rests on @Virtue_Money to propose a solution that respects the core philosophical principles of DLT while finding a way to make victims whole, whether in full or in part.
It's time to spread awareness to the people of #IOTA. As a community validator ourselves, we have a big impact here!

IOTA Foundation is now pushing, behind the scenes, to βtouchβ the very immutability of the IOTA protocol in order to repair the consequences of the Virtue incident. If so, that is not damage control. It is crossing a constitutional red line.
Changing the protocol ex post to reverse, seize or reassign assets affected by a dApp failure is not a βtechnical solutionβ. It is changing the rules of property after the event. Responsibility should remain at the layer where the risk originated: Virtue, its architecture, its oracle dependencies and its risk-management framework. Pushing that liability down to the L1 through an ad hoc protocol intervention would undermine infrastructure neutrality, transaction finality and the legitimate expectations of every participant relying on the networkβs rules.
Yes, technically, a network can coordinate a hard fork. But technical feasibility is not the same thing as protocol legitimacy. If application-layer failures can be repaired by rewriting the settlement layer whenever the outcome becomes inconvenient, then immutability is no longer a property of the system; it becomes a privilege granted at someoneβs discretion. And discretion at the consensus layer has another name: moral hazard.
Now, allow me one small theological heresy. In the beginning, IOTA, the IF and the entities building around them sometimes appeared almost as one and triune. But that Trinity belongs to the Genesis of the project. Today there should be only one protocol deity: IOTA itself.
The IF, Nakama, TWIN and every other organisation in the ecosystem are, at most, its angels. They may build, protect, evangelise and occasionally perform engineering miracles β but they do not get to rewrite the tablets of the law when one of their creations goes wrong.
An angel becomes a fallen angel β Lucifer, if you will β the moment it stops serving the order from which its authority derives and starts placing its own judgement above it. In blockchain, that original sin has a rather less poetic name: discretion over consensus.
And we already know how the story ends when an angel decides that its interpretation of justice outranks the law.
We do not need fallen angels.
We need the protocol to remain God. π π€
