Police violence is a systemic problem in the US – and it happens on a scale far greater than other wealthy nations.
Is this how police in the "land of the free" should treat civilians?
60% of women in jails under local control have not been convicted of a crime and are awaiting trial.
Is tearing legally innocent women away from their families really helping anyone?
People experiencing cycles of incarceration and release are more likely to be homeless.
And, being homeless makes formerly incarcerated people more likely to be arrested and incarcerated again, thanks to policies that criminalize homelessness.
It’s a revolving door.
The US has the highest incarceration rate of any independent democracy on earth.
The data is clear: mass incarceration is deeply ingrained in the identity of the US.

The HIV rate in prison is 3x the US rate. Most states also still criminalize HIV & there are concerning gaps in testing policies across the country.
It’s time for the carceral system to get serious about public health interventions for this vulnerable population.

The answer is yes, using #VR to help incarcerated people imagine a world beyond the prison walls @creative_acts is making prisons safer, getting people out of solitary confinement, and returning people to their communities with the skills they need to stay free!
