a customer buying a premium product may be purchasing fewer future decisions
buy once
keep longer
repair instead of replace
know it works
there’s psychological value in closing a category for a while
one reason “limited edition” can create desire has nothing to do with objective scarcity alone
scarcity can turn a product into a timestamp
i was there
i got that release
this version existed only then
products can become souvenirs of participation
i think copy should occasionally make the customer feel smarter
not through flattery
through giving them a useful distinction they can immediately apply
the moment someone thinks:
“ohhh, now i know what to look for”
you created value before asking for money
the strongest CTA can sometimes be reducing the size of the commitment
“start your 30-day transformation”
sounds like work
“see which plan fits you”
smaller psychological step
the right CTA depends on how much commitment the customer is ready to make right now
one useful way to think about an offer:
it changes the decision environment
the product stays identical
but:
price
bundle
guarantee
bonus
payment structure
deadline
change how the customer evaluates action
offer strategy is behavioral design around the product
a strong brand can sometimes charge for predictability
the customer isn’t paying only for a better average outcome
they’re paying to reduce variance
same quality every time
same fit
same service
same experience
reliability becomes valuable when failure is costly
if everyone in a category claims:
fast
easy
premium
effective
the words haven’t necessarily become false
they’ve become low-information
differentiation requires information the customer can use to distinguish choices
one thing i love finding in research:
the sentence customers say right before giving up on the old solution
“there has to be a better way”
“i’m done with this”
“fuck it, i’m buying one”
that’s the transition from tolerance to action
amazing creative territory
if the customer’s desired outcome is visible to others
social feedback can become part of the reward loop
compliments
comments
recognition
results aren’t only experienced internally
customers can be skeptical of products that seem too easy
especially when they believe valuable outcomes require effort
“get fit doing nothing”
can trigger disbelief because it violates the customer’s causal model
persuasion sometimes needs to fit what people believe effort should look like
one thing i’d love more marketers to understand:
“people are emotional buyers” is so broad it’s almost useless
which emotion?
triggered by what?
competing with which other motive?
changing which behavior?
psychology becomes useful when it becomes specific
customers can value a product because it removes social awkwardness
split bill automatically
easy introductions
discreet payment
silent device
some of the best convenience benefits are interpersonal
customers can be motivated by avoiding wasted potential
expensive camera sitting unused
talent not developed
fitness lost
money idle
the pain isn’t only current failure
it’s the gap between actual and possible self
one thing i’d ask after every creative win:
what new question should this result make us ask?
good results shouldn’t end curiosity
they should focus it
if customers constantly compare your product with a cheaper alternative
don’t only defend your price
understand what the cheap alternative does well
respecting the competitor makes your differentiation more believable
something i keep reminding myself:
your customer can want the result and still reject the product
desire and belief are separate problems 🧠
“i would LOVE to sleep better”
doesn’t automatically mean
“i believe this $79 sleep mask will make me sleep better”
sometimes the ad already has enough desire
what’s missing is a believable path from product → result

static ad i made for a height increasing shoe brand
instead of selling the shoe, we sell the pain behind it
feeling overlooked, chasing girls, lacking confidence and always feeling like the shorter guy in the room
the shoe is just the mechanism
the real product is confidence, attention and presence
one thing i’d ask when a brand has incredible retention but weak acquisition:
what do long-term customers understand that prospects don’t?
!! that gap may contain the entire creative strategy
