#ONStorm #ONwx The bird migration is showing strong yet again tonight across Southern Ontario! 🐦

This time, the radar view we’re looking at is from Franktown near Ottawa. At first glance, it looks like widespread rain is moving across Eastern Ontario. But if you step outside, you’ll notice it’s completely dry.

That’s because what you’re seeing on radar isn’t precipitation at all. It’s thousands upon thousands of birds taking off shortly after sunset as they continue their incredible journey south for the winter.

Weather radar is so sensitive it picks up these massive flocks in flight, painting the screen as if it were a rainstorm. It’s a fascinating look at one of the great natural migrations happening right above us.

Similar to what we saw last night in Southern Ontario! Which turned out to be a record number of birds in the air at once - over 1 billion across America!

It’s also a good reminder of how we can help these birds along the way. Bright city and yard lights can confuse or disorient migrating birds, sometimes leading to fatal collisions. Turning off any unnecessary lights at night during migration season gives them a clearer, safer path south.

If you check the radar tonight (especially if you’re using IW Pro without noise reduction), you can actually see the migration happening right now in our skies!

Birds prefer to migrate at night to avoid predators and to benefit from the cooler temperatures without the heat of the sun.

Did you notice how, right after sunset, the radar went from mostly empty to being full of blue and green? That’s not precipitation – it’s birds!
