Apple’s Fall iPhone Event (Sept 9, 2025): The Cupertino-ology Report

At its core, the launch was defined by two central themes: the widespread democratization of many formerly "Pro-only" features across the entire iPhone lineup and the exploration of a new product category with the introduction of the thin iPhone Air to replace the iPhone Plus in the line up.

The big picture (TL;DR):
Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 family and a brand-new iPhone Air, refreshed Apple Watch (Series 11, Ultra 3, SE 3), and AirPods Pro 3. The base iPhone finally gets ProMotion, Apple is flexing more of its own silicon (N1 wireless + C1X modem), and Watch adds FDA-cleared hypertension notifications.

The “Firsts”

First “Air” iPhone: iPhone Air debuts as Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever (~5.6 mm). Also, the first time Apple uses the Air moniker on iPhone. 17 years of Air heritage (MacBook Air) is finally gracing the iPhone.

eSim: iPhone Air is the first eSIM-only iPhone sold globally and the first eSIM-only phone available in China. Though launch in mainland China is delayed specifically over eSIM regulatory support. Apple confirmed that users in China will not be able to activate overseas eSIM cards on their devices.

First “Pro” A-series chip in a non-Pro iPhone: iPhone Air ships with A19 Pro though with one less GPU core (the base iPhone 17 uses A19).

First Apple "Proxima" N1 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread networking chip in an iPhone. Apple used a Broadcom chip previously.

First Apple-made cellular modem in a mainline (non-SE/e-series) iPhone: the iPhone Air uses Apple’s in-house C1X 5G modem (the earlier C1 debuted in the iPhone 16e on Feb 19, 2025).

First time every new iPhone gets a ProMotion (120 Hz) display: iPhone 17 brings ProMotion to a non-Pro model for the first time.

First Apple-designed Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Thread chip in an iPhone: the Apple N1 networking chip comes to the entire iPhone 17 family of devices.

First 2 TB iPhone: iPhone 17 Pro Max adds a 2 TB option (prior iPhones topped out at 1 TB, introduced with iPhone 13 Pro in 2021).

First time the base iPhone starts at 256GB: The entire iPhone 17 lineup starts at 256GB (first ever for base models), up from 128GB on iPhone 16. MacRumors+2MacRumors+2

First $1,099 starting price on a “Pro” (6.1-inch) iPhone: iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099; prior Pro generations (11 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro) started at $999.

First single-camera iPhone with next-gen Portraits of anything (not just people and pets): iPhone Air (2025).

First Apple MagSafe battery limited to a single model: iPhone Air MagSafe Battery (Air-only), $99.

First iPhone (and charger) with USB-PD 3.2 SPR AVS and charge uplift to ~40 W with 50% in ~20 min.

First iPhone marketed as having “like eight pro lenses.”

First Pro iPhone with three 48MP sensors at once (Main, Ultra-Wide, Telephoto) the hardware foundation that enables those eight “lens” equivalents.

First AirPods case with the U2 (2nd-gen Ultra-Wideband) chip: AirPods Pro 3 MagSafe Charging Case lists “Apple U2 chip in MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C)” in Apple’s own tech specs.

First AirPods with extended precision finding range vs. Pro 2: Apple quietly improved Find My range/accuracy thanks to the U2 in the case, positioned as up to ~1.5× farther than Pro 2.

First AirPods Pro with built-in heart-rate sensing (PPG): Works with new workouts in the Fitness app on iPhone.

First time Ceramic Shield also protects the back: iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max

First “Ceramic Shield 2”: iPhone 17 family

First 12 GB of RAM in an iPhones ever: iPhone Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max. Previous max RAM on iPhone was 8 GB.

First time a non-Pro iPhone ships with 12 GB of RAM: the iPhone Air (while the base iPhone 17 stays at 8 GB).

2025 lineup debuts Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), Apple’s new memory safety hardening for iOS.

First AirPods Pro rated IP57 (buds + case): A step up from Pro 2’s IP54.

First FDA-cleared hypertension notifications on Apple Watch: feature rolls out within a month via watchOS 26 on compatible models.

First Series-line battery rated up to 24 hours: Apple’s claims Series 11 has “up to 24 hours” of battery life and a tougher Ion-X glass (2× more scratch-resistant).

First Apple Watch SE with an Always-On display: Apple Watch SE 3 has AOD now.

First SE with fast charging (Apple: “2× faster”)

First S10 SiP in an SE: S10 SiP brings gesture features like Double-Tap/Wrist-Flick and on-device Siri to Apple Watch SE 3.

First Apple Watches with 5G: Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 add 5G cellular (where supported).

First Apple Watch with satellite: Ultra 3 adds Emergency SOS via satellite

“How long has it been since?”

Since the last new iPhone sub-brand: The iPhone “Air” is the first new mainstream iPhone label since “mini” (October 2020) → ~5 years. (Mini introduced with iPhone 12 mini on Oct 13, 2020.)

Since ProMotion came to iPhone (but only Pro): ProMotion debuted on iPhone 13 Pro (Sept 14, 2021). Bringing it to non-Pro iPhone 17 took ~4 years.

Since base storage bump appeared on iPhones: 4 years since iPhones jumped to 128GB with iPhone 13 on Sept 14, 2021

Since a max storage bump appeared on iPhone: First offered on iPhone 13 Pro (Sept 2021). Jump to 2 TB on 17 Pro Max → ~4 years later.

Since Apple’s last FDA-cleared Watch feature at launch: Sleep Apnea Notification – 510(k) K240929
Cleared: Sept 13, 2024. Delta to next (hypertension): ~11 months, 30 days.

Since a wholesale design shift: Many characterize 2025 as the biggest iPhone refresh since 2019's iPhone 11 Pro with the square triple camera bump → about 6 years.

Next-gen Portraits to single-camera phone: iPhone 15 (2023) → iPhone Air (2025) ≈ 2 years.

Charge speed yardstick: “50% in ~30 min” era (since 2020) → “50% in ~20 min” on 17 Pro/Max (2025) ≈ 5 years.

“Seven lenses” → “Eight lenses”: Apple’s Pro iPhones were marketed as “seven lenses” in 2023–2024 (15 Pro/16 Pro). The jump to “eight” happens with 17 Pro in 2025

Base iPhone RAM bump: 6 GB (iPhone 15/15 Plus, 2023) → 8 GB across all iPhone 16 models (2024) → 8 GB again on iPhone 17 (2025).

• Time since the last base-model increase: 1 year (2024 was the jump; 2025 held steady).

• Pro RAM bump: 8 GB (15 Pro, 2023) → 8 GB (16 Pro, 2024) → 12 GB (17 Pro/Max, 2025).

• Time since the last Pro increase: 2 years (from the 2023 8 GB baseline to the 2025 12 GB bump).
