we counted every WASM opcode in every contract deployed on MultiversX mainnet.

28,115 contract files. 267 million opcodes.

the top three:
LocalGet 27.2%
I32Const 15.0%
Call 13.3%

more than half of all deployed contract code is "read a local, push a constant, call something".

what is behind this?

a Rust contract compiles to WASM. in the framework, BigUint, buffers and storage are managed types: the contract holds a handle, and the real work happens inside the VM through an API call. so the contract itself is mostly glue. load, push, call.

a few more details from the report:
- loops are only 0.34% of opcodes
- CallIndirect (dynamic dispatch) is 0.01%
- MemoryGrow shows up 2,763 times in 28k files
- zero floating point opcodes. none. determinism first

why should a contract dev care?
the cost and the risk sit mostly at the boundary between contract and VM, in those API calls, much less in arithmetic inside WASM. that is where gas pricing and reviews deserve the most attention.

honest limit: this is a static count. it tells you what is written, not what runs. a tight loop can execute a million times and still be 3 opcodes in the file. a runtime profile is the next interesting step.

the tool is a small Rust CLI in mx-sdk-rs. run it on your own build output:
