Just to explain what happened to me in Houston, as a number of people have asked:

Upon getting back to the hotel lobby after the Astros game on Friday night, I suffered a medical issue immediately after drinking 2-3 cups of ice cold water there, where my heart began beating really fast and wouldn’t slow down with an irregular heartbeat.

I went to an A&E where I was checked & they informed me I was experiencing atrial fibrillation, or Afib. I informed of when I was was due to fly back & was told the two ways to address the issue were either via medicine or electrical cardioversion.

With an irregular heart rate of between 105-120bpm I was placed on an IV drip & various measures were taken to try to address the issue. I was given the medicine option, but whilst this slowed the heart rate to 95-105bpm it was still beating irregularly.

The decision was taken to undergo electrical cardioversion to shock the heart into re-regulating my heartbeat. I spent some time questioning with the doctors & cardiologist whether this was safe & was given the utmost assurances it was.

So I was briefly (~45 mins) out under anaesthetic & the electrical cardioversion shock was carried out. This re-regulated my heartbeat from Afib straight away & reduced it back to 65-75bpm, however I was understandably kept in the hospital for a further 6 hours to ensure that this was stable enough for me to be discharged & indeed to fly the next day.

All in all, an extremely scary experience to go through, especially away from home of course. I will have further investigations to pursue on this issue now that I am back home.
