Mukhtar Alam Shagdhar — The Current Calligrapher of the Kaaba’s Kiswah
Mukhtar Alam is the current chief calligrapher of the Kiswah the sacred covering of the Kaaba. Though he holds Bangladeshi citizenship, he was born in Saudi Arabia, where he received his training in Arabic calligraphy. He devoted years to rigorous practice, eventually attaining mastery and earning the stature of a respected teacher.
In the year 1422 Hijri, while in Jeddah, he met the merchant and accomplished calligrapher-artist Muhammad Salim Bajnaid. Deeply moved by the elegance and precision of Mukhtar Alam’s work, Bajnaid submitted his portfolio to the General Presidency. This led to a formal examination at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah. Alam passed the test with distinction and was appointed as a calligrapher at the Kiswah Factory in Jumada al-Awwal 1423 Hijri (July 2002).
At the factory, he introduced several important innovations to enhance precision and quality. Most notably, he implemented a specialized electronic calligraphy program on computers, skillfully integrating modern technology with the traditional art of inscribing the sacred cloth.
While he modernized working methods, he remained faithfully committed to the original design created in Thuluth script by the revered calligrapher Sheikh Abdul Rahim Amin Bukhari whose name still graces the Kiswah to this day. Under Mukhtar Alam’s hand, the letters grew more commanding in size and stroke width. He refined the delicate balance and harmony between circles, rectangles and their frames and further enriched the internal ornamentation of the Kaaba’s door curtain (Burqa) and its surrounding border, elevating the overall majesty and beauty of this profoundly sacred textile.
Allahu Akbar! This is the beauty of Islam: wherever you find yourself, you can pray. The whole earth has been made a place of worship for the believers.
May Allah keep us steadfast in our prayers and make us among those who remember Him wherever they are. 🤍🤲🏻

This historic library stands on the land traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, who was born in the blessed month of Rabi' al-Awwal during the famous Year of the Elephant (around 571 CE).
The site is situated in the area known as Shi‘b Banu Hashim, close to the pathway leading out from Mount Marwa. For many visitors, it remains a place of deep historical and spiritual significance connected to the earliest days of the Prophet’s PBUH life.
The Heritage Commission of Saudi Arabia announced the discovery of rocks with inscriptions dating back to the earliest days of Islām. The rocks were discovered in the Al-Mahd governorate in the region of Madīnah.
The most prominent inscription bears the name of the second Caliph, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه.
The inscription reads: “Allāh is the guardian of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb in this world and the Hereafter. There is no god but Allāh.”
