The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the film equivalent of eating two king size packs of Reeseโs cups.
The first pack is delicious, stuffed with flavor and delight. But the second pack is where the stomachache kicks in; and thatโs this movie.
The visuals are strikingly gorgeous, the soundtrack is blissful and the licensed music is kept to a minimum. Seriously, Illumination animate the hell out of this film and itโs packed with so much color and detail. The score? Even better than the original Mario movie.
But unfortunately, thatโs where the praises end because this movie is an absolute mess.
The story? There barely is one. Even with the first film, for all its flaws, had a simple Mario story that you could follow. Here, there is way too much going on in too little time.
Characters, plot-lines and Easter eggs are thrown in and out at record pace without any time to enjoy or appreciate what youโre watching. A 99 minute sprint to the finish and that short of a runtime just isnโt enough with how much movie there is to juggle.
And yes, the fears are confirmed, Star Fox has a bigger and more prominent role in a Mario Galaxy Movie than Princess Rosalina and itโs very obvious why.
It wasnโt enough to tell an amazing Mario story, nah, corporate needed to set up endless spinoffs and attempt to create yet ANOTHER cinematic universe. The parallels between this film and 2020s Scoob! are uncanny.
You can jangle the keys all you want, but if it doesnโt make sense for the story, then it becomes pandering and obnoxious. Itโs tiring, itโs exhausting and this kind of behavior canโt keep being rewarded.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a crushing disappointment all around and Mario fans deserve so much better.
I listened to the whole DK Bananza soundtrack and yeah... this might be its only weakness. There are hardly ANY memorable themes outside of the lagoon, then it just falls off all the way until heart of gold at the very end. Not having David Wise return was truly a mistake.
