We create problems and then blame the government when we suffer the consequences of our actions.

During the early years of Uber, around 2015/2016, I met a driver who used a trick. He’d book himself a ride using a promo code and then drive to his destination. He’d buy bulk SIM cards, register each one as a rider on Uber, and use the promo code “GTBANK” (if I recall correctly, it gave a N5,000 promo to first-time riders). After using the code, he’d register another SIM and repeat the process. He’d do this multiple times throughout the day, taking only a few normal trips.

He also mentioned using a simulation app to run trips. The app essentially simulated that their vehicle was moving around picking up fake trips to fool the Uber app. Once a trip ended, they’d register another account with the same promo code and run another simulation.

Then running trips offline. Their excuse was that Uber and Bolt were taking out their percentage without really contributing anything. Uber took 25% on every ride, while Bolt (then Taxify) started with 15% but later increased it to a flat rate of 20%. I asked if they could get these customers without the e-hailing apps. It was understandable if a previous rider got their number and requested their service afterwards, but getting a trip through the app, then negotiating for an offline trip and a much higher rate was cheating the company that provided the app that connected them to the rider.

I had the worst experience in Abuja and Kaduna. I spent about three weeks in both cities and I think it was just once that a driver didn’t request we take the trip offline. They requested you take the trip offline while also requesting an upward review of the cost. Government get their fault, but the harm we cause ourselves is somehow greater in certain circumstances.
