I faced a similar tricky situation when I moved to MΓ‘laga in November
I was searching for an apartment to rent and was asked for proof of income and to show that the rent would not be more than 30%-35% of my income
"This shouldn't be an issue" I thought
How wrong I was
While the money I earn through consulting is higher is more than 30%-35% of the rental price but because I get paid that into a UK company to be more tax efficient I ran into a problem
The estate agents and property owners wouldn't accept bank statements from my business bank account and wanted me to provide pay slips showing my salary (which was the minimum in the UK to be more tax efficient)
That left me with two choices:
1. Renting through Airbnb and accepting they're going to be paying 15% inflated prices because of the service fees
2. Find a property to rent through Idealista / Facebook who didn't need the proof of income
Thankfully I found a furnished apartment through Facebook which I paid 1 month up front and 1 months deposit to get a 6 month contract
