A rare female pygmy hippo born at Berlin Zoo has been named Brötchen, the German word for “bread roll.”
The calf, born on May 9, recently enjoyed her first outdoor bath under the watchful eye of her mother, Debbie. Zoo footage showed Brötchen wiggling her ears as she explored the water for the first time.
At her latest weigh-in, Brötchen tipped the scales at 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds, nearly double her birth weight. The zoo said she is developing well and steadily gaining weight.
Pygmy hippos are typically solitary animals, and Debbie will raise the calf on her own. The endangered species is native to the forests and wetlands of West Africa.

A horse pulling a carriage in New York City’s Central Park collapsed and died Tuesday evening near Strawberry Fields, according to witnesses and animal welfare advocates. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m., with the horse reportedly dying minutes after collapsing.
The death comes just days before supporters of Ryder’s Law are set to rally at City Hall in support of legislation that would phase out the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry. The bill is named after Ryder, a carriage horse that collapsed while working in Manhattan in 2022 and later died from his injuries.
