Every few months crypto gives us a new “I did everything right and still got rekt” story.

This time it’s @itscoachgoodman

Guy had his Bitcoin in cold storage. Keys on a Coldcard. Device never touched the internet. Locked inside a safety deposit box. Never shared the seed with anyone.

Still woke up to 18.25 BTC gone. $1.6 million.

Apparently one vulnerability from 2021 in the seed generation code was enough for someone to brute force it with AI.

No phishing. No exchange hack. No someone stole the device. Just pure “the hardware that was supposed to protect you had a bug from five years ago.”

So the updated security checklist for 2026 is:
1. Don’t trust exchanges
2. Buy a hardware wallet
3. Put it in a safe
4. Get drained anyway

Self-custody was supposed to be the final answer. Turns out even that has seasons now.
