I actually did the whole discord and hype thing in 2021, and I ended up hating it in the end. Definitely more people joined and knew about the project by doing that. I thought it would make enough money to hire more developers and get things done quick, but in the end it was just that I was doing the work slow solo and funding 90% of it myself.
The other 10% felt like I had tricked people out of their money. I didn't really need that extra 10%, and I especially didn't want to feel like a villain for taking any money at all when I didn't need it. I have made many amends to investors so that I can feel morally free, and I will make sure they do not feel taken advantage of and come out ahead, even if at a cost to myself.
I think the success really comes down to just finishing the game, and I don't think hyping it up before that is actually beneficial. It turned out to be actually a problem, especially morally. This is why I haven't really sold packs or tried to do much marketing or hype/community building, despite many people advising me to do so.
I understand, it is what every other project does. But that doesn't make it correct. Wuffi tried to tell me that I needed a discord as well. I told them to shove it and that we do things differently. WAX doesn't need another community based project built on nothing but hot air. Imagine selling out, bending the knee, to arrogant meme coin peddlers for a measly few thousand dollars.
Game first, then hype. I planned to have it ready by this summer, but I was side tracked by major illness and then family tragedy. But, it is not all bad, since I now have an inheritance which I have put fully towards my project and it is now 100% self-funded for a long while. I can just focus on coding and fully realizing the blueprint/vision.
It also takes time to talk to people in discord, and I don't have it in me to be both coder and entertainer. It leaves me scatterbrained and working sub-optimally. I do have a discord, but I kicked out 3/4 of the members, made it private, and now I only do personal invites (thanks to scammer/harasser fucks). I don't talk in there much anyway, and that has left the place a wasteland. Here is a 7 day invite link, lets see how it goes: https://t.co/6brMUln6g1
Originally, I thought I would do a kind of blockchain kickstarter—fund development with crowdsourcing thing—but in web3 people expect ROI almost immediately. I thought people would help motivate me to stay productive, but the opposite happened. It is much better if I can just fund myself, not have to work a day job, and just get the coding done in peace. And then focus on marketing, hype, and selling things afterwards.
This is a personal project and life goal for me more than it is hype for profit and to make sales. What little sales I did already do have people claiming "rugpull", but I am more interested in making a game than making money. If you look at the 2ndary volume, 90% of it is me (gcftc.wam, pixilminirpg, banxawallet1) buying my own minis back because I feel bad that people put money in and can't get out.
Most of the minis were actually even given away for free, but people still complain about ROI on zero investment. All old investors/members got $ROOK token, and I pumped that up and 5-year-locked a bunch of liquidity on it so they can sell out if they want to.
I did sell a few art collectible packs this year, mostly to long time supporters, but 100% of that went directly to funding the artist who joined last year and hasn't received any compensation for all their hard work. I haven't actually done a main mini drop since 2021, and I don't plan to until the game is ready.
There are many upgrades to the upcoming minis such as animated GIFs, special FX, backgrounds, rarity rankings, but I won't drop them until I am done with the new Unity game client (and also until all the old minis can be upgraded to these new versions first).
I have a specific vision that I want to bring to reality, because I think web3 can be so much more than it is so far. I thought by now others would have created what I envision, but they haven't. At this point, it feels like no one else will do it and it is my destiny to show people the way.
I am just recently starting on the final leg of the journey, now with full funding, a brand new PC, and no side-quests or distractions. All my pets and family are young and healthy and there is only so much bad luck one can have before things have to turn around—not actually true, monte carlo fallacy... but I must believe it.
First thing is the Unity based web3 game client, and I am making it modular and usable by others so they can create their own blockchain RPGs with it. A blockchain RPG maker!
