Carlos Ramirez spent fifteen years chasing down anyone who used his drawing without asking, and then licensed it to a memecoin 😏
He drew Trollface in MS Paint in September 2008, an 18-year-old in Oakland making a comic about how pointless trolling was on 4chan. The face escaped the comic almost immediately and became the symbol of the thing it was mocking. He registered the copyright in 2010 and defended it seriously: Hot Topic paid to put it on shirts, and in 2015 a takedown notice from him got Meme Run pulled off the Nintendo eShop while the game was sitting at number five on the store.
@Troll_ started as a token nobody officially ran, and the community took it over from there. Ramirez had already said publicly he wouldn't take legal action, but the holders went to him anyway, because an exchange listing is easier with paperwork than without it. He turned down their first offer of $50K. What closed instead was a six-figure deal funded by around ten large holders pooling SOL together, giving $TROLL an exclusive worldwide licence to Trollface across crypto and merchandise, with Ramirez keeping 11% of net merch revenue.
That licence is part of why the token sits on Coinbase today. Exchanges are wary of listing anything built on somebody else's intellectual property, and $TROLL is one of the very few that can point to paperwork. The contract has since been renounced so nobody can change how it works, and practically the whole 1B supply is already circulating.
you gotta get out of the mind set you need sub 100k market cap to make money, if you can spare 100$ and hold it for a year or longer, through ups and downs.
If troll eventually hits what Shiba topped out at, 100$ turns to 150,000$
It’s only a hundred bucks, just hodl that shit.
Familiar IP is the shortest on-ramp crypto has ever had.
Brands already live in people’s heads. You don’t need a thread, a whitepaper, or a 40-minute explainer when someone already knows the character, the logo, the cartoon, the card set. Recognition does the first half of the work. The second half is removing the barrier: if joining the movement is as simple as holding a token or a collectible, people actually look. That is why IP coins matter. They sit at the intersection of something the public already understands and a community they can enter without permission.
It will still take time before this really compounds. Fine. First-mover windows look quiet until they don’t. What you can already see are the first serious bridges: Web2 brands using Web3 rails to onboard people who never sat in a Telegram war room. Pair a known IP with a low-friction token or NFT and you stop recruiting only from crypto’s echo chambers. You recruit from the real world – stores, timelines, kids who already own the plush, adults who already bought the cards.
That distribution advantage is the point. Crypto keeps talking to itself. IP coins talk to people who already care about the thing, then give them a stake. Someone has to plant those first flags. The projects doing it now are not late to a meme cycle. They are early to a distribution cycle.
NFTs are not a side quest here. As more of life moves digital, collectibles get tokenized. Trading cards already showed the demand is real and the markets are growing. When the IP is famous, the NFT is not “a jpeg.” It is a portable piece of a brand people already collect offline. In a world that keeps digitizing ownership, licensed IP collectibles become the merch, the ticket, the membership card – and the coin becomes the liquid layer around that culture.
Memecoins without memory fade. IP coins start with memory. That is the whole trade.
maybe some people still don’t know, as we are still growing our store https://t.co/eV5deQXm0y, we have been running meta ads, figuring out who we target etc. and we’ve been 10xing our ad spend with sales, 100$ into 1000$ in sales, slowly growing the brand and customer base, but really just learning who it is, until we start really spending and targeting.
If you hold $TROLL or a troll NFT, you can create your own listing on our store using the trollface ip, and if the community votes your product in with 69 votes, you will earn sales for the rest of your life on that product.
a 200$ NFT, you only need $2000 in sales on a created product to make your NFT purchase back, and right now our store is pretty close to making that daily.
As we spend more on ads and grow further and have more activations and marketing stunts, our store growth will increase your sales as well.
this is just the beginning.
