@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri If study cinematography, specifically deakins, you should know that you wouldn’t overexpose the face to brighten the shadows in the background. You would add more light on set.
Your solution was quite literally “fix it in post”
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri And actually yes if you listen to Roger deakins podcast (widely regarded as the greatest living cinematographer) he speaks ALL THE TIME about how images are best when they are captured in camera properly
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri Before o brother where art thou there was no color grading, so yeah. Gordon Willis, Conrad hall, even Roger deakins prior to that movie never color graded anything because the only way to tweak the color was to add chemicals to the bath while developing film.
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri My mission is accomplished because we have clearly established that the people who say digital looks just like film don’t know the first thing about cinematography
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri I think any cinematographer worth his salt would add more light in the shadows because overexposing the subject would be one of the quickest ways to get fired
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri So if you’re shooting someone’s face, you just adjust the exposure and overexpose the face so you could capture more detail in the shadows???
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri You first said you can’t see into the highlights deeper in film, and moved the goalpost by saying “proper exposure is different in film because you can see deeper into the highlights”
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri proper exposure is the same. Peripheral exposure is one of the main reasons we use lights so I’m not sure what you’re arguing here other than that you were wrong, have changed your argument and are now moving the goalpost
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri Proper exposure is proper exposure whether you’re in film or digital. And yes there are no “film light meters” or “digital light meters” because there is literally no difference. You can use the same reading to apply to film or digital
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri You were just trying to argue that digital and film handle highlights and shadows in the same exact way. But now you know how cameras work? Get back to data wrangling before you format their footage without transferring it.
@jacob_o_@wokeisntawake@maewestsghost @91tophtwitch @BilgeEbiri I would recommend you to get out of your post production studio and going out to actually use one of these cameras before asserting yourself to be the foremost authority on the subject
