I think it's more people in the west value their own individual lives more than society or "life" in general

That's why radical ideologues in the US always end up externalizing their anger (i.e. shoot a guy, champion violence against others, etc.)

i don’t think western cultures can really appreciate self immolation. its from more dramatic parts of the world where the value of making a statement is a lot higher than the cost of an individual life
