When we look at an oak, a sequoia, or a balsa tree in the Amazon rainforest, we're looking at solidified carbon and oxygen.

Trees do not obtain structural mass from the soil; it comes out of thin air. Plants are built almost entirely from atmospheric gases—living, complex architectures of carbon, oxygen and sunlight. No wonder that as children, we hug them, play and climb in them, or wander through their woods, hearing them sighing in the wind.

Around 90% to 95% of a tree's dry weight is carbon and oxygen, pulled directly from atmospheric carbon dioxide. Most people assume trees draw their body from the earth, yet the soil volume beneath a canopy remains unchanged as a sapling matures into a giant.

Roots do not consume dirt to build branches; large trees leave no gaping holes in the ground. Instead, the root network is a mechanical anchor to hold the heavy tree structure upright, while absorbing water and a tiny fraction of soil minerals—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are their biological multivitamins, accounting for less than 5% of final dry mass.

Through photosynthesis, sunlight breaks apart carbon dioxide and water molecules. The plant releases oxygen back into the atmosphere and chains the remaining carbon and oxygen into glucose molecules, forming complex structural polymers like cellulose and lignin.

Across the globe, an estimated 3 trillion trees hold roughly 500 billion cubic meters of wood. Every forest on Earth is in reality solidified atmosphere—hundreds of billions of tons of air trapped, structured and given physical form by living plants.

Mankind owes its survival to these friendly giants of the natural world.

Why an African army mattered

The idea of a United African Army was not some romantic military project.

The question was very practical: why should Africa require AFRICOM, French forces, NATO or any other foreign military structure to solve African security problems?

Gaddafi believed Africans should develop the capacity to defend Africa themselves.

That meant training, coordination, financing and eventually a continental security structure capable of responding to conflicts without providing foreign powers with a permanent justification to establish themselves militarily on our continent.

The principle was sovereignty.

If you cannot defend yourself, somebody else will offer to defend you. And once somebody else controls your security, they acquire enormous influence over your politics and your future.

African security must ultimately be African.

The legal position:

- England: farm gate only, with a health warning, banned from every shop
- Scotland: banned
- Canada: banned outright, and a farmer called Michael Schmidt was prosecuted over it for 20 years
- United States: a federal offence to sell it across a state line

On sale in every British supermarket, to anyone, without a warning label:

- Raw oysters
- Sushi
- Steak for tartare
- Bagged salad
- Vodka
- Cigarettes, behind a little door

Every human being who lived before about 1890 drank raw milk or none at all. That includes everybody who built the cathedrals, won at Agincourt and wrote the King James Bible.

It is the only food in the Western world that a government will serve to a monarch and prosecute a farmer for selling to her subjects.

The health warning was never for the Queen. The warning, it turns out, is for people who cannot afford their own herd.

Tony Blair – The UK’s Obama.

He is not the villain of this story either. He is its most elegant European expression – the long march rebranded as modernization, delivered by a man so gifted at the aesthetics of the new that nobody noticed how old the project was.

1. He arrived in 1994 as the leader of a Labour Party that had lost four consecutive elections. What he offered was not socialism – he was too clever for that. He offered the third way: the progressive project stripped of its rough edges, repackaged for the professional class, delivered in the language of competence and modernity. New Labour. The name was the program. Everything that had made Labour unelectable was old. Everything Blair offered was new. The content was largely the same. The packaging was revolutionary.

2. The rhetorical genius was real. He could make the correct position feel like common sense, make the opposition feel not just wrong but somehow embarrassing, make voting Labour feel like joining the future rather than the past. "Things can only get better" was the campaign song. It was also the complete statement of the cultural hegemony achieved: the existing order was not just wrong, it was over. History was moving. The question was whether you were on the right side of it.

3. The institutional transformation was thorough and deliberate. Thirteen years produced: the Human Rights Act embedding European legal frameworks into British law, the devolution settlements fragmenting British sovereignty, the Supreme Court replacing the Law Lords, the civil service transformed, the BBC consolidated as the cultural apparatus of the new consensus, the public sector unions embedded as a permanent political constituency. The ratchet, applied with more sophistication than any previous British government.

4. The conservatives who followed spent a decade trying to reverse it. Cameron, May, Johnson – three prime ministers, three different styles, one shared achievement: they maintained what Blair had built while pretending to oppose it. This is what the ratchet looks like from the other side. You win the election. You do not win the institutions. The civil service thinks differently. The courts think differently. The BBC thinks differently. The universities think differently. You govern inside a framework designed by your opponents – and slowly, without noticing, you begin to think inside it too.

5. He left office in 2007 significantly richer than he entered it, which he achieved with a speed and comprehensiveness that impressed even people who disliked him. The lecture circuit, the consultancies, the memoir, the foundation. The man of the people became a remarkably successful business. The standard trajectory of the long march’s most successful products – who discover upon leaving office that the network they spent their careers building is also an extremely effective commercial infrastructure.

6. British politics runs approximately ten years ahead of American politics. Blair was Obama before Obama – the gifted communicator, the third way branding, the institutional transformation beneath the aesthetic, the network that outlasted the administration.

After Blair came Brown – the placeholder who discovered the machine was harder to run than to inherit. Like Biden, he was in the room. That was no longer enough.

After Brown came the conservatives – who couldn’t reverse the ratchet and didn’t really try.

And then came Starmer.

Keir Starmer is what the long march looks like when it no longer needs the gifted communicator. When the institutions are sufficiently captured, the inspiring leader is optional. You need someone who will maintain what was won – and take it further, quietly, without the poetry, without the charm, and without the need to persuade anyone of anything.

The Red Brigades with a budget and a parliamentary majority.

British politics is ten years ahead of the U.S.

- More CLA than beef, pork or chicken
- More tryptophan than beef, the thing your serotonin is made of

Now sit with the audacity of this. Beef is the finest food a human can eat. Lamb is the upgrade to it. And there is an upgrade to the upgrade, sat in a field right now, that most people under 60 have never tasted.

Mutton. That same animal, two years older.

- Two more years on grass, so two more years of grass in the fat
- More iron, because it builds with age and the meat is darker for it
- More fat, and a cap thick enough to earn the word
- Higher in the long-chain omega 3 than lamb, beef or veal
- More carnitine, creatine and taurine, which all rise in mature red muscle
- A life, rather than a spring
- Half the price, because the trade decided old was an insult

And it's ours. Britain fed itself on mutton for 700 years before the supermarket shortened the animal to fit the shelf. Put a shoulder in a low oven at lunchtime and the kitchen fills with something that sounds like Vaughan Williams and smells like your great-grandmother's Sunday.

Yes, the taste is stronger. Yes, it smells of sheep. That's the fat of an animal that lived, and after the third mouthful you'll wonder how you ever settled for the baby.

Beef is good. Lamb is better. Mutton is the finished article.

Ask your butcher for it, and keep asking until he stocks it.

America’s reserves are now at their lowest level since 1982, while China is aggressively buying physical oil around the world…..reportedly paying huge premiums to secure it.

Now imagine China keeps buying and America starts rebuilding its reserves, while Middle Eastern supply is disrupted.

Less supply + more buyers = higher prices.

And when energy prices rise, the cost of almost everything rises with them.

Oil isn’t just about petrol. Energy is the economy.

This may well go down as the single greatest transfer of public assets by elected democratic governments in world history.

Without any serious consultation with their own citizens, Western governments eagerly aligned with the UN and signed onto framework agreements like the 2015 Paris Accord. What began as voluntary international targets rapidly morphed into binding domestic legislation.

The resulting legacy is the systematic exclusion of taxpayers from decision-making, while administrations power ahead, committing billions in subsidies to unproven pet projects—such as Australia’s much-hyped green hydrogen initiative.

Virtually all heavy industry across the West is now in chronic decline. Manufacturing jobs are being hollowed out, striking directly at power-intensive sectors like electric arc steel, aluminium smelting, and fertiliser production. Once-abundant, cheap, and reliable hydrocarbon energy is being degraded and decommissioned in favour of weather-dependent renewables.

Simultaneously, the supply chain for this transition has been handed lock, stock, and barrel to Beijing. China now produces roughly 90% of all photovoltaic components, refined critical minerals, and panel hardware—cementing its position as the greatest manufacturing power in history through an unprecedented transfer of Western wealth.

In place of high-density power generation, more than a million wind turbines and an estimated 9 billion solar panels are now scattered across open farmlands, hillsides, and coastal vistas. Because these sources are intermittent and unreliable, integrating them into existing power grids presents a colossal $21 trillion global infrastructure challenge.

Prior to this shift, Western industrial policy prioritised dense, dispatchable energy security. Today, governments unilaterally lock in multi-decade decarbonisation commitments that outlast their electoral tenures by decades. Vast tracts of public and agricultural land are greenlit and bulldozed for transmission corridors, access roads, and sprawling industrial turbine arrays—all to serve an intangible belief system that vilifies carbon dioxide, the very driver of essential energy and biological growth.

The tangible result? Some of the most expensive household power bills in modern history, the destruction of dispatchable coal and gas capacity, and severe damage to national industrial, economic, and defensive resilience.

As one outraged writer noted, Net Zero stands as perhaps the most diabolical act of self-inflicted harm ever visited upon democratic nations by their own leadership.

Government by regulatory decree is not government by representation. Mandating a multi-decade economic rewiring without an explicit electoral mandate violates the fundamental social contract between the state and the citizen. Locking in 30-year subsidy contracts strips future generations of their democratic right to adjust policy based on real-world performance.

If we weren’t so accustomed to being betrayed, it would be recognised for what it is: a raw, heavy-handed exercise in power at the expense of the people.
