Dear Peter Obi,

In criticising Nigeria for not being on the list of the fastest growing economies in Africa, you again expose the fact that you are a trader, not a leader, and your area of expertise is best suited for running a market stall at Onitsha Market.

If you examine the list of the fastest-growing economies in Africa and the world, as compiled by the IMF, you may notice that it is dominated by countries with very small Gross Domestic Products.

For example, at the top of the list is South Sudan, which has a GDP of $4.97, according to the IMF, and a GDP growth rate of approximately 27%. Next is Guyana, with a GDP of $25 billion. Followed by Libya, with a GDP of $45 billion.

None of the three nations with the highest GDPs in the world —namely, the United States, China, and Germany —were listed.

This is because a slight improvement in a country with a minimal GDP would result in a high percentage of GDP growth.

For example, with a GDP of less than $5 billion, South Sudan received a total of approximately $1.38 billion in international humanitarian assistance last year. That amount entering their economy would boost GDP growth exponentially.

Ditto for Guyana and Libya.

It does not mean that their economies are better than Nigeria's.

To put it into perspective, Nigeria experienced a 4.3% GDP growth rate in the last quarter, of which that amount was tied to production and exports. Notably, the dollar figure of this 4.3% is greater than the entire GDP of South Sudan.

However, if you, Peter Obi, believe that South Sudan is better than Nigeria, you can equally move there. After all, South Sudan offers electronic visas to Nigerian citizens.
