Matthew 16:26 - For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
When we start to have great ideas about ourselves, God allows greater temptations to come upon us and defeat us, so that we're humbled and seek his help again.
— Saint Isaac the Syrian
"A person is in need, he suffers, and then somehow the other world opens up. The more you are in suffering and difficulties and are 'desperate' for God, the more He is going to come to your aid reveal Who He is and show you the way out" - Fr. Seraphim Rose
"How can you use your tongue to utter worthless and vile words, when precisely this mouth and tongue are receiving the Most Holy Body of Christ and are sprinkled with the Blood of our Savior, thus becoming a golden sword against sin and honored members of the Holy Spirit? Do not defile, then, the honor that God gave to the tongue, and do not use it for any sin. And together with your tongue, keep your heart also clean from all evil against your neighbor, and likewise guard your eyes and ears, keeping your entire body and soul in holiness."
St Sofian of Antim
We give the poor what we no longer need and what we have been planning to throw away. Therefore, we will give the rich something we cannot even afford. This is a terrible hypocrisy that has conquered our hearts. For, by sparing for the rich things of value to us, we hope for some reciprocity. And by giving what is not needed to the poor, we affirm ourselves in our own eyes, saying, "Look at me, I am so generous and merciful."
But the problem is, the rich do not care at all about your gift, while the poor will enjoy every bit of attention. This is how we live our already short lives: trying to impress those who won't even understand, and ignoring the grateful (or greedy) stares of people who truly value us.
By the way, this is exactly what Jesus Christ pays attention to when he sees a widow. In those patriarchal times, widows were usually in an extremely difficult financial position. And behold, she makes her donation, and He says, "Look, all the others come and from their surplus throw in some small amount, thinking that they have done a good deed, and she gives her last." And this sacrifice is the most precious and the greatest. Because when we do any charity or good deed, the Lord does not look at the amount, but at our heart.
You have seen that on the icons of the saints, the Lord Jesus Christ is represented above, with the imperial globe in one hand and with the other extended in blessing. This is taken from reality. From heaven the Lord ever watches over those who combat for His sake upon earth, He helps them actively, as the almighty King, in their struggle with the enemies of salvation, blesses His wrestlers with "peace and joy in the Holy Ghost," [Romans 14:2] and bestows the crown of life upon them after they have finished their earthly exploits. Thus, Christians, all of you strengthen yourselves in faith and hope, looking unto Jesus, ''the author and finisher of our faith," [Hebrews 12:2] Who ever watches over you and sees all your acts from the heavenly heights, as He looked down upon the proto-martyr, Stephen, opening unto him heaven and His glory; as He looked upon Saul, afterwards Paul, and also revealed Himself to him in the heavens, enlightening him with His light, and calling him with His voice. [Acts 7:55-56; Acts 9:3-4]

All men desire peace but they do not know how to attain it. St Paisios the Great, having lost his temper, begged the Lord to deliver him from irritability. The Lord appeared to him, and said, “Paisios, if you wish to avoid anger - desire naught, neither judge nor hate any man, and then you will have no anger.” Thus everyone who renounces his own will before God and other people will always be at peace in his soul; but the man who likes to have his own way will never know peace.
St Silouan the Athonite
There are no people more blessed than those who have established a connection with the heavenly radio station and are connected with God by the wire of reverence. And there are no people more unhappy than those who have broken their connection with God and anxiously circle the world and turn the receiver handles, trying to catch the radio stations of the world, to at least briefly forget the great anxiety of their out-the-rut life.
St. Paisius of Mount Athos
If you are not sick, and if you do not suffer, it is not because you are lucky, but because the Lord calls you to participate in the suffering of others. You should be eyes for those who are blind, ears for those who are deaf, and feet for those who cannot walk. You must be an assistant to people with disabilities, those who cannot move themselves, so that the love of Christ is revealed in this ministry.
~St Luke of Simferopol and Crimea
