NIGERIA'S 27 YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC PRACTICE; SO FAR, HOW FAR?

Few weeks ago, in the company of well-meaning Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in the field of law, legislation, civil rights activism, politics, and academics, I participated in a policy dialogue on the state of democracy in Nigeria organized by @Kimpact_Global. The dialogue was themed; "Strengthening Democratic Practices at the Sub-national Level in Nigeria".

As themetic as the theme was, it sparked intense deliberations which highlighted that Nigeria's Democracy is active, but its performance remains constrained over the years. This deliberations was backed by an evidential report published by KDI on the State of Democratic Performance In Nigeria-2025 (find the link to the report here: https://t.co/RxWXrgG1Ay).

The report and the discussions pointed to the fact that the status quo is that of distrust in the electoral process and this distrust is not the result of a single failure. The distrust has been constructed through the interaction of different agents ranging from legal developments, institutional actions and political narratives. At this stage, it has not metamorphosed into a full-blown Democracy rejection but it's merely a shift from confidence in Democracy and its agents to a sustained suspension.

However, the goodnews is that the trajectory is open, as much as the trust is weakening, we can still achieve stability and a high performing Democracy. But the crux is on Democratic institutions and agents to provide clarity and consistency in their actions.

The next phase of Democratic strengthening must focus on making institutions more effective, representations more inclusive, and civic spaces more protected. Because where this is not achieved in the months preceding the 2027 general elections, the challenge will not only be to conduct a credible election but to sustain confidence that electoral process.
