@stephsharpe98 I agree! A large portion of the work women do for their children is seen as less valuable than other paid jobs. However, in reality this type of work requires much effort and can be draining. This work should be valued in our economy. #gndr1000
It was very interesting to hear Jackson Katz’s TedTalk about violence against women. His discussion surrounding victim blaming is extremely relevant. Emphasizing men being held accountable for violence against women is another thought that is of great importance. #gndr1000
@WingHongLaw Sadly, true. Women’s contributions are often overlooked. The harsh reality is that some women have no choice but to put their own education/ careers on hold to raise children. As a society we should empower women and put measures in place to support them pursue careers! #gndr1000
The process of restructuring has a major indirect impact on women. Cuts to public services/ programs that benefit childcare poses stress to mothers. Without these benefits many mothers must provide unpaid carework making it also difficult to pursue their own career. #gndr1000
@rohanrumj It is known that many healthcare professionals do not take women’s health concerns seriously and that this can result in life threatening outcomes. One example is how women may present with different heart attack symptoms than men, this is turn can lead to misdiagnosis. #gndr1000
CBC states that many people have no idea that unintentional racism exists. It was shocking to hear that people experience racism from their healthcare providers. People are treated unfairly based on race. This is unacceptable at anytime, especially in regards to health. #gndr1000
@DanielleBickfo2 I was also shocked by this ad. It was interesting to get an idea of how much beauty standards have changed over the years. It reiterated the message that beauty is just a idea constructed by media to set standards. It has nothing to do with the value of a person. #gndr1000
This weeks content on media & weight is pertinent in today’s culture. The media contributes to how people perceive themselves in comparison to what is portrayed as the ideal body. This is turn impacts how people view themselves and can result in negative body image. #gndr1000
@rohanrumj I agree Rohan. In today’s fast pace world we often forget to reflect upon our countries past. Canada is seen as a multicultural society but racism remains present. We must continue to fight for equality. #gndr1000
“Being Black in Canada” shows the unfair treatment Viola Desmond experienced simply because she was black. It highlights many black activists in Canada in their fight for equality and justice and serves as a reminder that we must treat everyone with respect. #gndr1000
@BrandiL79382971 I agree! This video was informative to show viewers the inability of an increase in multiracial children ending racism. It shows that the only way to truly end/ discourage racism is to educate and promote equality for all people. #gndr1000
The Canada Day video highlights the issues of colonization. Canada’s celebrations only surround European history. It misrepresents our countries indigenous past which spans well beyond 150 years and fails to recognize the cruel treatment shown towards this population. #gndr1000
@DanielleBickfo2 @DanielleBickfo2 I heard about this article as well. An amazing story highlighting Zayid’s message. Having a disability should never be a reason not to pursue your ambitions. It’s about celebrating what people can do instead of focusing on what they cannot.#gndr1000
Maysoon Zayid’s TED talk informed listeners of the oppression people with disabilities in our society experience. Her comedic tone put an interesting spin on her inspiring message that disabilities should not hold anyone back from following their dreams. #gndr1000
@rohanrumj@rohanrumj I agree with your opinion. The difficulties that gay people experience are tremendous. We are lucky of how far we’ve come as a nation. However, there will always be hateful people in the world. It is our responsibility as citizens to spread love! #gndr1000
After watching the “Two-Spirit” video I thought it was wonderful to see Draco’s parent show love and acceptance towards his daughter. It was refreshing to hear the father describe her as being given a “gift” rather than something to hide or be ashamed of. #gndr1000
@DanielleBickfo2 It was also a shock to me Danielle to hear this. So devastating to think that people feel the need to change someone because of who they choose to love. Everyone deserves respect and the freedom to live the life they want. #gndr1000
The “sissy boy” experiment shows the utterly inhuman and unnecessary treatment that people like Kirk have experienced and reinforces the message that there is no need to change anyone. No one should be shamed or treated unjustly based on who they choose to love. #gndr1000
@SarahMu02379400 I also agree that this is a shocking issue. I was aware of recent laws made in the U.S but I had no idea that some provinces in Canada are still so far behind. Women are being denied this basic human right of choice over their own bodies, change must happen! #gndr1000
Crenshaw’s TED talk was very eye opening. Intersectionality is such a pressing issue that must be given more attention. Her analogy of cross roads represents how people who face multiple social inequalities experience extreme discrimination and challenges within society #gndr1000
