Good Morning. Today THOUSANDS of medical doctors including cardiologists will round on their hospitalized patients and document in the chart: “Goal LDL Cholesterol <70”. And up the statin to a very high dose.

They will do this because their physician authority has told them to do this.

Unfortunately very few MDs will stop and think:

1. Is this the right thing to do, many of our patients are over the age of 75 and were not even studied properly in the trials? It’s one thing giving a low dose of medication, but is a high dose really necessary?

2. The brain is 60% fat. Cholesterol is part of every cell membrane. Is there evidence that being hyper-aggressive with fixing a number, especially in an older person, can be bad for their cognition? (there is evidence)

3. How many people are walking around with muscle weakness because of a high statin dose, impairing their quality of life for only a tiny potential benefit? (if you actually read the data, chances of benefits are slim).

The answer is that VERY FEW MDs will ask the above questions. This isn’t because they are bad people. It’s because right from medical school these professionals have been trained in a system that emphasizes compliance, rule-following, and a lack of critical thinking.

The above is just one example of how hoardes of physicians practice medicine in the wrong way. Jumping on a bandwagon without adequate thought.
