Dare I say this fight between Tifa and Loz is the best choreographed piece of media in the Final Fantasy 7 franchise with the best cinematography in addition to that…?
I feel like we don’t talk about THIS enough. Wym Ada was his first thought right after he passed out? You just know he saw her in that moment. The idea of her was enough to pull him back, its kind of soft when you think about it.Out of everything, out of everyone, her. Always her.
Lost Odyssey Review:
After Final Fantasy X and XII Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu went off to create what was essentially their version of a Final Fantasy XIII.
Partnering up with Microsoft for an epic Xbox 360 exclusive JRPG seemed like a match made in heaven. Xbox needed a bigger foothold in the Japanese market and Hironobu’s new studio needed funding. The result was a high budget, full fledged JRPG that has every last quality you would expect of a typical Final Fantasy.
Make no mistake, this IS Final Fantasy in everything but name. Taking place on a giant world map travel-able with an airship, a slew of companions, mini games, dungeons and side quests across 4 discs, this is everything you’d want out of an AAA JRPG.
It didn’t get the attention it should have because at the time of its release (2007) the market was more interested in action based games and the Xbox 360 was far from the console of choice in the market where JRPG’s sell best.
Many of the ideas behind Lost Odyssey are either the best most familiar qualities from past Final Fantasy’s or new ones that don’t get the credit they deserve. Lost Odyssey has Clair Obscur’s pictos and luminas system. It also features timed button presses for attacks in a very similar fashion. This all makes sense as Lost Odyssey was cited as a game Clair Obscur’s director loved.
All of this background information is to set the playing field for what my experience with Lost Odyssey was. I fell in love with the characters, I was moved by the depth of emotion on display during interactions that felt deeply real and at times close to home.
The gameplay, systems and music is on the same level that you’d expect from creators with such a storied history. Lost Odyssey has a wonderful narrative, but I’d be lying if I said the beauty wasn’t in the humanity of the characters as they deal with the reality of their own emotions.
A few things didn’t land or could perhaps have been improved. Unfortunately, Lost Odyssey has in my humble opinion one of the least enjoyable villains of any JRPG I have played. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s a very noticeable shortcoming. Some dungeons are a bit stale or drag on too long, but the majority of them are wonderful. The “A Thousand Years of Dreams” short stories that are sprinkled throughout the game are wonderful pace breakers and beautifully written, but can overstay their welcome when you are doing side content and they consistently interrupt gameplay for 10 minutes or more.
Ultimately, these are mostly nitpicks with one major flaw in that of the villain that I think can be mostly overlooked. This is a JRPG any fan of the genre should play and a testament to the talent of those behind the project that replicated the quality of their past works all over again in an entirely new IP. The world slept on Lost Odyssey and it’s not okay. This is one for the ages.

Naoki Hamaguchi says FF7 Remake’s battle system was inspired by games in the Final Fantasy series, such as FF13, and other action-based games!
“The foundation of it all is the original Final Fantasy 7, a turn-based game. However, we do draw inspiration from many action-based games that require you to think tactically about how you battle and position yourself,”
“The Stagger system was pulled from Final Fantasy XIII.”

Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Naoki Hamaguchi says he would love to remake Final Fantasy VI, but would also like to make something completely new!
"If I had all the time and money in the world, Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite mainline title. That would be very cool to take on as a remake.
That being said, I've put my heart and soul into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series for over a decade now. Working on something completely new would be quite fun as well."
