2 thinking modes: Focused and Diffuse
As a dev, it's easy to think "if I'm not focused on a problem, I'm not working."
But, after intense focus, it's useful to relax and let the mind slip into "diffuse mode".
In diffuse mode, we unconsciously solve problems.
Woah, just learned about CSS Container Queries.
Big idea: Declare queries that monitor *the size of the component's container* (instead of the entire page).
Result? Components that respond to their container's size! 😍
In Chrome Canary (under flag). Hope this catches on soon!
React pattern: One component needs to know if another component is being displayed, so it can configure itself accordingly. If the components have a parent/child relationship, that's easy: Pass a prop.
But what if they're not in parent/child relationship? 🤔

Coding is like creating art with a pencil.
I can erase my mistakes when I see a better path. So, I can get started with only a general vision in my head.
I don't commit to a certain approach. I merely strive to get closer to my vision with each move. I iterate toward a goal.
Concern: What if I specialize and the market changes?
My take: In software development, specialists tend to be in high demand, and earn more than generalists. So the extra money you earn as a specialist can fund the downtime necessary to retrain when necessary.
This resonates. I rarely work more than 6 hours a day. But I do work a few hours each weekend to offset my short workdays.
Benefits:
Each hour of work is more productive because I stop work when my focus fades.
Weekdays feel like a weekend because I have plenty of free time.
Three keys to effective interpersonal business communication:
1. Begin with the end in mind.
2. Share only relevant info. Shorter requests are more likely to be carefully listened to carefully, and thus, understood.
3. Be unemotional. Stick to the facts.
Sometimes I read things on edutwitter from someone who thinks they have discovered something amazing, which often sounds profoundy, thinky, or researchy, and I sigh and reflect on how music educators have known said thing for years. In evidence I give you Mrs Curwen, 1886:
Software development is about these 10 transformations...
(thread)
1. Transform manual into automatic.
2. Transform slow into fast.
3. Transform error prone into error free.
4. Transform physical into virtual.
5. Transform expensive into cheap.
