You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.
Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895 - 1983)
This scene in Andrei Tarkovsky's "The Sacrifice" (1986) was shot twice. In the first take, when the house started to burn, the film in the camera jammed & couldn't be reloaded in time to capture everything.
The producers and some of the crew members wanted Tarkovsky to use edited footage to complete the film.
Tarkovsky, who had never compromised for his art, persuaded them that a retake was necessary, since he believed that this scene was the soul and essence of the movie.
For the retake, the house was reconstructed within 2 weeks & it was set on fire again. This time everything went according to plan.
Remembering the legendary filmmaker, Andrei Tarkovsky, on his 94th birthday!
Piers Morgan: “What happens to a country like Russia, which committed war crimes emerges unpunished for any of this?”
Jeffrey Sachs: “Well, if the US were punished for all its war crimes, the world would be a better place... if Israel was punished for its genocide...”
Devastated and heartbroken 💔. Danya was one of the kindest, thoughtful, and incredible people I ever met and I'm so lucky to have gotten to work with and learn from him over the years. He truly made the world a better place and will be missed more than words can express. My prayers are with the Naroditsky family. His absence will be irreplaceable in the chess community😭😭
If you relate the truth with anger or passion you won’t convince anyone no matter how obvious to you the truth you’re relating is. Relate the truth with kindness and the stupidest person in the world will understand you.
On Remembrance Sunday, we commemorate all those who have been killed in war.
The darkness of war is not a distant past, but an ever-present reality.
Today, let us honour the victims of violence by striving to build a more peaceful world for everyone, everywhere.

Amidst the frigid expanse of the NorthAtlantic Ocean lies a land of fire and ice – Iceland. This island nation sits right over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary that extends from the Arctic to the tropics.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge forms a spectacular underwater mountain range, stretching over 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles). In Iceland, this underwater ridge reaches above sea level, creating an impressive landscape of volcanoes, geothermal springs, and geysers.
Iceland's rift valley, most part of which is hosted in the Thingvellir National Park, is an example of this ongoing geological drama. Visitors can walk along the crest of the rift valley, literally standing on the boundary between two continents.

Tenochtitlán (not to be confused with Teotihuacan) was one of the greatest cities in history and must have been a sight to behold in its day. It was founded by the Mexica people in c. AD 1325. According to legend, the Mexica people had a vision of an eagle eating a snake on top of a cactus, and believing it to be a sign from the gods, they founded Tenochtitlán on the spot. Over time the city developed to become the capital of the Aztec Empire, which formed from an alliance of three city-states—Tenochtitlán, Tetzcoco, and Tlacopan.
Tenochtitlán was built on an island and several smaller artificial islands near the western shore of Lake Texcoco. The city had causeways and canals for access and an estimated 200,000 or more people living there at its peak, making it one of the largest cities in the world at the time, and the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas. Aqueducts supplied the city with water and there was a huge marketplace that attracted thousands of people daily. There were also zoos, aquariums, palaces, and pyramid temples, most notably the Templo Mayor, which was dedicated to the gods, Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc.
When the Spanish first laid eyes on Tenochtitlán, many of them wondered if they were dreaming. According to Spanish conquistador Bernal Díaz del Castillo (c. 1492 - 1584):
"When we saw so many cities and villages built in the water and other great towns on dry land we were amazed and said that it was like the enchantments in the book of Amadis on account of the great towers and cues and buildings rising from the water, and all built of masonry. And some of our soldiers even asked whether the things that we saw were not a dream.... I do not know how to describe it, seeing things as we did that had never been heard of or seen before, not even dreamed about."
In 1521 the Spanish laid siege to Tenochtitlán and the Aztec Emperor, Cuauhtémoc, attempted to flee but he was captured by Hernán Cortés and tortured. The soles of his feet were burned over hot coal in the hope that he would reveal the location of vast amounts of gold. But Cuauhtémoc revealed nothing and four years later he was hanged. He was the last Aztec emperor.
Much of Tenochtitlán was destroyed and the lake was eventually drained. The site is now Mexico city and much of the modern capital is built in what was once the lake, which at one time was home to what must have been one of history's greatest cities.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has told his department to prepare for the annexation of the occupied West Bank in the wake of Donald Trump's victory in the US elections.
Berlin's official city portal just wrote our film No Other Land has "antisemitic tendencies". A film that won the Berlinale and was recently invited to a special screening in the German embassy in Israel. It pains me to see how, after murdering most of my family in the holocaust, you empty the word antisemitism of meaning to silence critics of Israel's occupation in the West Bank (the topic of our film) and legitimize violence against Palestinians. I feel unsafe and unwelcome in Berlin of 2024 as a left-wing Israeli and will take legal action.

Metabolism predated the genome. DNA is an exceptionally efficient way to compress and retain information but not clear that the central dogma of genetics will help us move health science further forward.
