When the grenade landed next to the wounded Marine he was patching up, William Charette did not dive away from it. He dove onto it, throwing his own body over the helpless man and taking the full blast himself. He was a Navy medic. Shielding other people was the whole job.
Charette was a Navy hospital corpsman, one of those sailors the Marines borrow to keep their men alive, attached to a Marine rifle company in Korea. By March 1953 the war had frozen into the outpost fighting, brutal contests over little named hills, and his outfit was in the thick of the battle for a set of outposts including one they called Vegas. On the night of March 27 he was out in the middle of it, doing what corpsmen do, crawling from one broken man to the next through a storm of small arms and mortar fire, patching holes and dragging the wounded to cover.
While he was kneeling over one casualty, an enemy grenade dropped in right next to them. There was no time to throw it back, no time to run. So Charette did the only thing that would save the man under his hands. He flung himself on top of the wounded Marine and covered him with his own body, and let the grenade go off underneath him.
The blast tore up his face and left him dazed and in shock, and it destroyed his medical kit and blew his helmet away. But the man beneath him lived. And Charette, wounded and half deaf and with his supplies gone, simply kept working. He tore strips off his own clothing to make bandages when he had nothing else. At one point he stripped off his own body armor and put it on a wounded man who had been stripped bare by a blast, then carried him through the fire. He kept treating Marines all night, refusing to stop for his own wounds.
Here is a fact that tells you how deadly that job was. Five Navy corpsmen earned the Medal of Honor in the Korean War. Charette was the only one of the five who lived to receive it. The other four got theirs the way corpsmen so often did, posthumously, killed saving the men they were sworn to protect.
President Eisenhower placed the medal around his neck in 1954. And then, a few years later, Charette was given one more sacred duty. In 1958, this humble corpsman was chosen to select the Unknown Serviceman of World War II, walking down a line of identical caskets and laying a wreath to choose the one who would rest forever in the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington. Of all the men in the military, they picked the medic who once caught a grenade with his own body to represent the nation's reverence for its unknown dead.
Cool stuff from Davidson, who used his 20th birthday as an opportunity to raise $10,000 for a local adoption agency and personally matched all donations up to $5,000
Out of every disgusting, dishonest piece of filth the mainstream media has produced about Hurricane Helene...
This is the worst.
60 Minutes has NEVER done a story on the families FEMA denied.
They NEVER mentioned the Amish, who are STILL in the mountains rebuilding homes 550 days later.
They NEVER mentioned Jake Jarvis, who has worked 550 days STRAIGHT FOR FREE for Hurricane Helene victims.
Instead, they dug up some fringe conspiracy angle to smear the people who actually showed up as White Nationalists.
I'm so angry.
Let me tell you what 60 Minutes will NEVER report on
I was there. I lived it. I am still here.
I shared every story I could find.
Me, my wife, hundreds of volunteers delivered RVs to mothers holding babies who were sleeping in TOOL SHEDS AND TENTS in the freezing cold, in the mountains.
Because their homes had been ripped off the side of a mountain and washed down the French Broad.
So tell me 60 Minutes... WHERE WAS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?
Tell me, WHY did all these volunteers NEED to show up?
Any thoughts on that?!!!!!
Any investigation AT ALL into the federal or state government's response to Hurricane Helene?
Please tell me... if the federal government was doing such a GREAT JOB, why did we need to put victims in RVs...
...A MONTH AFTER THE HURRICANE?!!!!!!!
Literally every single victim you talk to in Western North Carolina has a horror story about dealing with FEMA...
...and guess who they will all say actually cam through for them?
Neighbors.
Church groups.
The Amish.
The Cajun Navy.
Shawn Hendricks.
Samaritan's Purse.
MercuryOne.
The Mission Mules hauling insulin up washed-out roads, ONLY ACCESSIBLE by mules.
Greg Biffle burning his own fuel in helicopters.
Veterans like Adam Smith who organized helicopter rescues with other veterans BY HIMSELF and then was demonized by the media for it.
Volunteers like Jake Jarvis working TO THIS DAY, 550 days later without ANY PAY AT ALL.
THOSE ARE THE STORIES FROM HURRICANE HELENE WORTH TELLING.
But 60 Minutes won't tell ANY OF THEM.
Because the truth makes the federal government the villain and the "deplorables" are actually the heroes in this story and they can NEVER admit that.
So instead they smeared the rescuers as white nationalists.
This is unforgivable.
I was there. I saw it with my own eyes.
And I will BE DAMNED if I let CBS rewrite the history of what happened to my mountains.
Ok, I've had it with Thom Tillis...
You deserve to know the truth.
During the aftermath of Helene, Thom Tillis’s staffers emailed me "Hurricane Helene victims" to see if we could help them while FEMA was kicking people out of hotels during the Biden administration.
2 of the 6 people he sent me were completely unvetted frauds trying to take advantage of the FEMA hotel program.
I sent the fraudulent people back his office and said they were frauds.
Never heard back.
I begged him for ACTUAL HELP from, you know... Biden's FEMA doing their jobs...instead of pushing random people on ME to help.
Also never heard back.
If anyone should be ashamed of their actions during Hurricane Helene… it should be Thom Tillis.
He also BARELY visited us during the aftermath of Helene and was essentially dragged back to us by JD Vance, who was awesome and did help us, personally.
...but you want to know who DID earn my trust?
President Donald Trump.
He showed up here.
He let Hurricane Helene victims tell their stories... for the first time on a national stage.
He gave them HIS microphone and let them speak and truly truly cared about us in a way I've never seen any other politician do in my life.
I cried my eyes out that day.
He didn't just show up... he literally pulled in a FORMER NAVY SEAL to run FEMA who called me on DAY ONE, asking me what was needed.
Cameron Hamilton, who ran FEMA at the time, got on a phone call with 5 families who had bad experiences with Biden's FEMA... I know, I was there.
He listened to them for over an hour and a half, and apologized for what Biden's FEMA had done to them.
He said these words, and I'll never forget them... "I am a public servant, it's an honor to serve you."
Trump EARNED my trust through action, through kindness, through ACTUALLY KEEPING HIS PROMISES.
Do you understand what that's like?
Do you understand the feeling of screaming into the void for help... and finally someone turns on a light and says, "I'm here to serve, what's wrong?"
It changed everything for me...
You know who didn't do that?
THOM. TILLIS.
Where was THOM TILLIS when we were mucking mud out homes?
Where was THOM TILLIS when I was driving RVs to mothers and their children in tents?
Where was THOM TILLIS when people were lined up 3+ miles for propane in the winter because they were living in RVs and needed help?
Where were you, Thom Tillis?
Because you sure as HELL were not here, in Western North Carolina.
Love college football and we are in a transformative time for players, coaches and fans. Headed into year 18 as a HC and enjoying my job more than ever. Just wish everyone would play by the same rules and take the game we love to the highest levels of success for everyone #ILL
Yeah this is not the take. Since we are talking about a player Dabo literally got out of the portal, what failure to evolve are we talking about? Failure to evolve beyond the rules?
The Results of the JMU and Tulane game don’t matter. They earned their way into the College Football Playoff and earned their butt whopping like:
-Alabama lost 44-16 to Clemson-2019
-Oklahoma lost 63-28 to LSU-2019
-OSU lost 31-0 to Clemson-2016
-OSU lost 52-24 to Alabama-2021
I have every Clemson game saved on my calendar.
No, I’m not a Clemson fan, and I’ve never even been to South Carolina.
But my neighbor, an elderly veteran paratrooper and Clemson alum who lives three doors down, is.
He struggles a bit with YouTube TV, so I check on him every Saturday.
Sometimes I stay, and we watch the game together, often with one or both of my boys.
He treats me like a hero every time I help him.
But as I walk past his office on my way out and see the wall covered in medals, gear, and awards, I’m reminded that I’m the one blessed by his heroics.
