I think people are trying to draw way too many national implications from last night.
NYC politics is its own beast, as are Mamdani and NYC-DSA.
BUT I think there are a few things House Democrats should take heed of:
+++
1) If you’re in a deep blue district (unless it’s predominantly old and Black) and you have had any past association with or funding from AIPAC, DFMI, etc. you better watch your six (👋 Diana DeGette, Shri Thanedar).
And if you already survived your primary, I would think very carefully about how you vote on Israel aid packages in the next Congress. And I would do an audit on who some of your biggest donors have given money to.
+++
2) With the exception of seniors, primary voters in these types of districts seem to be increasingly willing to forgive controversial old social media posts, especially if you are perceived to have moral clarity on other issues (like Gaza) or if you’re charismatic.
+++
3) Saying that you’re a fighter solely because you will stand up to Trump is not enough, this ain’t 2018.
+++
4) Identity politics is on its way out the door, even in the most left wing districts in the country.
+++
5) Local party machines will not save you (except if you’re in NY-12).
+++
6) Younger voters don’t care if you bring home the pork to the district.
+++
7) In swing districts (like NY-17) there’s still an appetite for candidates primary voters see as the most electable in the general election.
Darializa is like… the average normie socialist that you find in any Gen Z leftist circle. We’ll see plenty more like her. It should be the party’s role to move them to wiser policy positions, instead of completely shunning them out
Just utterly depressing that the Democratic party is about to send someone to Congress who opposes interracial marriage for "woke" reasons, sided with Russia's invasion of Putin, and cannot answer a basic question about prison abolition despite being asked four times in a row
As of 6 p.m., 420,527 New Yorkers had cast their ballots, surpassing the 352,000 total voters who turned out citywide in August 2022, the last time New York had contested House primaries.
@robinsonmeyer I had the opposite experience. Came home often to many flyers in UWS/Morningside Heights, much more than during the mayoral race. I wonder how it shakes up per neighborhood
A search of “@DarializaforNY” and “Haitiana” across social media platforms surfaces messaging that has gone largely unreported by mainstream and Spanish language outlets covering the #NY13 race.
For those who may have missed it, here's a former DR cabinet official -- pictured with Espaillat in an undated photo -- amplifying the racist conspiracy that Avila Chevalier is a secret Haitian trying to subvert Dominican political power in NYC.

@IntegrityOwlNYC He’s getting right wing Dominican figures campaigning for him and he didn’t condemn it in a debate. Also I am a journalist. I am commenting on a politician’s racist dogwhistles. If I’m emphasizing, it’s bc I’m Caribbean and am disgusted by these politics.
I think this happens with Marco Rubio as well. Of course tons of reporters, but I think his ties to Miami’s elites and the Cubans who are in favor of invading Cuba driving policy could be even more emphasized, esp considering expat Cubans foment the right throughout the Caribbean
Latino politicians are very frustrating bc they say and appear as one thing in English and another in Spanish, but there are very few reporters who can navigate both languages + cultural contexts. So we have Espaillat + allies trotting out far right racism unchallenged
last time i saw this much open racialized hatred from an establishment dem against a younger black challenger was the hillary campaign against obama. this kind of hatred is coming from the former DR energy minister as he campaigns for espaillat! local media & msm is silent! shame
