India has sent 96 people to America who started billion dollar companies. No one else is even close.
There's only about 5 million Indians in America. Almost one in 50,000 of them is a unicorn founder!
What a holy, special, beautiful people.
I will always fight for them.
@Ruesavatar@michelle_byoung This scenerio is a central element of the plot of the movie Husbands and Wives (Mia Farrow sets up Judy Davis with Liam Neeson, but then, long story short, Farrow and Neeson get together. (Actually one of Woody Allen's best movies, if one can still tolerate him at all))
@CourierSion6@0x49fa98 (There's an 'Oxford House' across the street from me and they get food delivery EVERY day, sometimes a few times a day, so far as I see without intentionally surveilling & it seems like it must be an obstacle to recovering healthy functionality, besides being a financial drain)
@pourfairelevide I don't think I currently have any print on demand books (most of my books are used) but is it right to guess they're of conspicuously lower quality? If so, could that maybe be improved? Because I sympathize with the aesthetic aversion, but it's obviously a better business tactic
@romanhelmetguy Its a strange line of argument when it is completely available to anyone to say 'This is an adaptation, with it's own diagetic logic, free from pretense to authenticity or duties to be faithful to the source'
This recent controversy keeps making me think about Peter Brook's Mahabharata, which is amazing and beautiful, and which ((in)famously) featured an ethnically all-over-the-place cast to portray the characters of the ancient Indian epic, and it worked amazingly well
Lupita Nyong’o addresses the racist backlash to her casting as Helen of Troy in “The Odyssey,” after some critics called Christopher Nolan a “coward” for not casting a white actress:
“This is a mythological story,” Nyong’o said in an interview. "I’m very supportive of Chris’ intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
Nyong’o said her interpretation of the character goes deeper than her beauty. “You can’t perform beauty,” she said. “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text, which has been studied and interpreted and derived from. The research could be endless. The good thing about working with a writer like Chris is that it’s on the page. The investigation starts with the pages you’re given. That’s what I based it on.”

Like I say, we'll have to see it to know if it works. I don't have high hopes, but that's partly because I'm cynical about the motivations - not for the casting itself, but for the obviously intentional instigation of controversy to drum up 'buzz' so far in advance of release
