The climate case for building with mass timber isn't crystal clear yet. There are claims its carbon footprint has been underestimated. Life-cycle assessments look at the carbon spent moving logs from forest to mill - and it turns out there are a lot of variables that impact the carbon footprint of a timber building - including the type of forest the wood came from, how the wood was processed, and the impact of transporting the timber from the processing plant to the site (Western Europe and Northern Quebec continue to be the best sources of cross-laminated timber for Ontario-based builds).
