Shocked implies an element of surprise. But this event, and many more incidents like it, has been on every single risk register that has passed your desk now for at least four years.
“Those who need it the most can’t access it.” So how do they feed into it? #NHS10YearPlan
Black women have the highest maternal and infant mortality in the UK.
Bangladeshi and Pakistani Brits have the highest prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
If you have learning difficulties you’re likely to live approximate 20 years less than someone who doesn’t.
If you come from the Irish traveller community you’re likely to have some of the worst health in England.
If you’re an Orthodox Jew then you’re less likely to have all your vaccinations.
If you come from the North of England then you’re more likely to need to the NHS due to disproportionate chronic health conditions and alcohol dependency.
The public and staff consultation on the NHS is welcomed but there are a few points to remember:
1. People with the worst health and health outcomes must not be ignored. They don’t typically engage with public consultations so DHSC needs to get out into communities to listen to the people who need the NHS the most. How do you contribute if you’re not online or have poor English literacy skills?
2. Similarly, less paid healthcare workers (bands 1-4) such as security, porters, healthcare assistants must also be empowered during this consultation. Only a third of the workforce are doctors, nurses and midwives. Nearly half are in the 1-4 banding. 3ish% of maintenance and ancillary staff (lower band) complete the annual NHS Staff Survey. This group of staff are also more likely to become patients with increased sickness leave and chronic health conditions. How do we include their voices when they already feel marginalised?
Food for thought @wesstreeting.
It always cracks me up when white English people say the problem is Muslims don't integrate to our society because having lived in Portugal amongst English immigrants I can assure white English people don't integrate for anything or anyone.
@iamlivyrose My experience of ward cover is the stress of not being able to see all the sick people as fast as I would like - adding all the other less acute tasks to that pile and giving them equal urgency is simply unmanageable
@iamlivyrose Agreed - no one is even saying discharges aren’t important, just that it’s entirely unreasonable to expect the F1 or SHO on ward cover to deprioritise someone acutely deteriorating
@MarkySaysThis@maryam_0m4r @Ask_foradoctor It’s physically impossible to be in two places at once. If someone is acutely deteriorating, we can’t walk away because someone might miss transport. That doesn’t mean discharges aren’t important. But our role is to prioritise what we HAVE to do right now to keep people alive
This is so disgusting. Imagine the mindset that made this. People are dying. Afraid. Exploited and desperate. The Tories now chasing Reform to the very hard right and it’s sickening. Just when you think they couldn’t sink any lower …
Private school is around 10 THOUSAND A TERM. You CANNOT "make a few sacrifices"/"work hard" and have a spare THIRTY THOUSAND A YEAR <per child!> It is a complete myth and I cannot stand to hear it ONE MORE TIME. It's not "normal families working hard" and "prioritising education"
1/4 I don't think most of you will necessarily realise how disgustingly racist this is. I previously worked for @EmilyThornberry's constituency office and can't begin to express how repugnant it is for an MP to refuse to hear from asylum seeking constituents.
Five infants died after developing whooping cough in England in the first three months of 2024, @UKHSA has reported.
There were 2793 confirmed cases of whooping cough in the UK up to the end of March. This compares with 858 cases in the whole of 2023

I feel so disgusted. I spent part of my childhood in #refugee housing, similar to this one. The rooms didn't even allow families to stay together. My twin & I were separated from our parents in a very crowded house. We were TEN. How has this become entertainment & promotion?
Your daily reminder that NHSE expects some first year doctors to hear where they are placed as late as 4 July (or even tba) and be ready to start work in this unknown destination w/c 22 July. Still no explanation from NHSE of how this has been allowed to happen. 1.n
