June 6, 2026 - A highlight moment for the Charleston Gospel Choir as we performed at the 2026 Piccolo Spoleto Festival Tribute to a sold-out audience.

After graduating from the all-Black Avery Normal Institute, which operated from 1865 to 1954, Ms. Whipper and her classmates sought admission to the all-white College of Charleston but were denied entry.

Gearing up for their 28th annual spring performance at the City of Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Charleston Gospel Choir members are putting in the rehearsal time to deliver what is sure to be a memorable performance. Have you gotten your tickets?

A lowcountry native, Jennifer D. Ancrum is a noted soprano soloist, choral director and multi-talented musician who has garnered the admiration of the choral community throughout the Carolinas.

Jennifer has traveled and performed abroad with choral organizations.

Dr. Johnnie J. Felder is an accomplished tenor, educator, and advocate for the performance and preservation of Black classical music and opera.

A native of Vance, South Carolina, he has made significant contributions to both the academic and performance realms of music.
