As an AD, I often hear people say, “Winning is not important.”
I disagree.
Winning is important, but the journey required to become a winner is even more important.
The goal is to maximize an athlete’s talent through adversity while teaching resilience, discipline, and accountability.
Losing should hurt, because standards matter. But every loss should become one step closer to winning.
If we tell athletes winning is not important, we are not preparing them for life.
The pursuit of winning teaches lessons that last far beyond the scoreboard.
We were able to honor one of the great supporters of @WDHawkSoftball 🥎 tonight for our annual Cancer Night game! Al Hermsen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on Oct 14, 2025. Since that time he’s been courageously fighting while continually coming out to support the Hawks!
Baseball and softball parents:
We have some new umpires out there working this year, particularly in non-varsity games. Sometimes they will struggle, and you need to understand they are there to learn and get better, just like the kids at that level.
Anamosa's Crystal Bonifazi-King embodies what high school sports are all about. Hard work and dedication can pay off when you believe in the process. And the superstar senior proved it at the 2026 state track and field meet! https://t.co/JUoVcUwjXZ
Anamosa sophomore Kasey Frommelt, on the final throw of her class 2A state discus event in Des Moines today, unleashes a huge and pressure-filled 140-foot, 5-inch effort and moves from third place to winning Anamosa’s first ever girls’ discus state championship! Congrats Kasey!
Anamosa seniors Sophie Sander and Olivia Miller both keep their golf careers going advancing through the class 2A regional today at Fawn Creek carding rounds of 89 and 90, respectively. The duo will take part at the regional final event in Waterloo Wednesday, May 20.

@k_bridgewater1 having a great freshman season with @RedTailSoftball. Leads the team in AVG (.371), OBP (.451), Hits (56), Runs (39) and Stolen Bases (34)!!
@ellie_flanagan3 is 8-2 so far this season for Clark College softball. She is also leading the team in ERA 3.47 and WHIP 1.46! She’s also contributing at the plate hitting for a .250 AVG.
Sometimes parents try to micromanage adversity for their kids. Good intention, but what actually happens is kids lose out on developing the ability to figure it out on their own. Struggling teaches them how to choose their own path. Don’t handicap them by always making life easy.
