When I went to Iowa to work for #PeteForAmerica one of the 1st people I met was Mayra Lopez and connected over rural health issues. She eventually served as a precinct captain for the Warren campaign.
So incredibly sad to see this

We have confirmed that a private plane came into contact with Pepco’s transmission lines in Montgomery County, resulting in an outage to approximately 85,000 customers. We are assessing damage and working closely with Montgomery County fire and emergency services.
Lessons learned from working for Pete’s campaign in Storm Lake, an immigrant community, still guides me now, working with underserved/immigrant communities. Ironically, it was the Simpson-Mazzoli Act that gave my own family a chance. Super special to learn about this friendship!
Ron Mazzoli was a good friend across generational divides for the same reason he was a great legislator across partisan ones: profound decency, great curiosity, unfailing positivity, and an earnest sense of purpose.

@jadabird@BetoORourke Wow, I didn’t realize that! I do remember brief mention of him in a campaign email a few years ago as it got some of us talking and brought awareness to local undertold history. I’ve been researching other undertold stories in Milam County, specifically, because of that email.
“We’ve Got To Try” by @BetoORourke is dedicated to Lawrence Nixon. The book describes Nixon’s time living in Cameron, TX (my hometown) and witnessing the 1907 lynching of Alex Johnson at the Milam County Courthouse. Rockdale is in Milam County and the next town over from Cameron.
Some context: as @BetoORourke spoke at a 340-person event in Rockdale, Tex., a dozen remaining protesters converged on him, and the video has circulated on Twitter as Beto being run out of town. The city has issued a statement calling the incident “an embarrassment.”
At George Dawson Middle School an autobiography co-authored by George Dawson at 103 has been banned. Mr. Dawson was the grandson of a slave. He learned to read at 98. His book is an inspiration to all readers except it can’t be read at the school that bears his name.
