“We were approached by his performance coach to put together some training sessions that were different from his usual basketball work.

Victor wanted to try his hand at rugby, so I had the privilege of coaching him one-on-one for two sessions. It was a great experience. I tried to make the sessions both enjoyable and engaging, while keeping them firmly rooted in rugby.

The idea was to expose him to movements he's not accustomed to, things like going to ground, getting back to his feet, tackling, staying upright through contact, and moving in ways that are specific to rugby.

I think he really enjoyed it. He was initially only supposed to come on the Monday, but he came back again two days later, which I suppose is a good sign that he liked it.”

“It takes a long time to summarize. I think it would take hours of discussion to summarize all the experience gained [in the playoffs].

I think coaching plays a huge role in going far in the playoffs: the quality of the coaching staff, and then obviously the quality of the players, along with their willingness to sacrifice and execute the game plan.

Then, at the end of the game, there are always situations - not coin flips, but where the players' talent and their ability to handle the moment make a big difference and heavily influence the game.

And in the playoffs, that happens a lot, in a lot of those games, these are the biggest games for us. So.. it's long! But yeah, there are a lot of things like that.”

« Il est unique. Et il a énormément progressé ces une ou deux dernières années. Quand il est arrivé dans la ligue, il cherchait encore ses repères physiquement, donc en tant qu’adversaire, je pouvais essayer d’exploiter cette faiblesse. Mais maintenant, il s’est renforcé et il a compris comment les joueurs essayaient de l’attaquer. Son placement est meilleur, il lit mieux les situations, il comprend d’où vient l’attaque et comment il doit s’ajuster défensivement.

Il est tellement difficile à jouer parce qu’il est unique. Personne n’a l’habitude d’affronter un joueur comme lui. Quand tu l’attaques, par exemple, tu n’as pas l’habitude de voir quelqu’un d’aussi grand capable de se déplacer aussi bien et de couvrir autant de terrain. Il change complètement ta manière d’attaquer, les angles que tu dois trouver simplement pour pouvoir aller au cercle.

Tu as toujours l’impression qu’il est quelque part autour de toi. Jamais très loin. Avec les Spurs, il a beaucoup de liberté pour venir en aide et ils dirigent énormément d’actions vers lui. Donc il est toujours quelque part dans un coin de ta tête : tu sais qu’il est là et qu’il peut te prendre le ballon.

Il faut un peu de temps pour s’adapter une fois que le match commence, parce que tu dois changer ta manière de jouer. Rien que par sa présence sur le terrain, il change littéralement le jeu, avec sa taille, son envergure…

Et c’est pareil de l’autre côté du terrain. En gros, tu défends sur un ailier de 2,24 m. Il peut manier le ballon, shooter en sortie de dribble, attaquer le cercle et marquer de toutes les manières possibles. Et ces derniers temps, il a surtout appris à beaucoup mieux gérer le contact et à jouer un peu plus lentement, sans te laisser lui imposer ton rythme.

C’est pour ça qu’il est aussi difficile à défendre qu’à attaquer. Il est incroyablement talentueux, il a cette taille, cette mobilité, et il est aussi entouré de très bons joueurs, ce qui le rend encore meilleur. »
