Research shows that the presence of SROs in schools increases the likelihood of discipline and arrest for Black and Latinx students. There is an overreliance on police state-wide instead of more restorative means of helping students such as investing in more student counsellors.
On September 20th a fight between two middle schoolers at West Side Middle School in Waterbury. The police were called; both students were arrested. One was charged with breach of peace 2, and the other was charged with breach of peace 2 and assault 3.

Proven by data: Waterbury had 259 students arrested in the 2018-19 school year. Despite only accounting for 3.5% of students statewide, Waterbury accounts for 18% of all students arrested in CT. Waterbury students are 5 times more likely to be arrested than their peers.
CT black and Latino students are 3.1 and 1.6x more likely to be arrested in schools compared to their white peers. We need to end the school to prison pipeline and remove police from schools #ctCareNotCops@ctCareNotCops
