The 1st celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State a year later, from 1/2 to 2/28, 1970. Since its inception, Black History Month has expanded beyond its initial acceptance being recognized in the United States as Black History Month in 1976.

The creation of Black History Month started with Carter G. Woodson with "Negro History Week" the 2nd week of February. The thought process behind the week was never recorded, but scholars acknowledge two reasons for its birth: recognition and importance.
