Welcome to #CTL1215 -- Science and Technology beyond Schools!
Join us on our journey as we learn together about S&T education in formal/informal spaces, affordances and limitations of each, how they may work in concert together, and co-create equitable learning opportunities.
@ctl1215 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO A1Q1: I think there is a stigma attached. We are taught in school that Wikipedia is not a reliable source because anyone can edit the information. Educators can teach students how to cross-check info and look for authors' sources when they use such sources. @DrAllisonR
@Pkim92733931@KellyMiao4 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Thanks for your follow up question, Paulis! I personally loved how my students had those "ah-ha" moments when we returned to the classroom and made connections between the two settings. I had one student told me that they appreciated how relevant the content was...
@chanelharrisss@KellyMiao4 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Yes, Chanel! In the reading, the author argues that being in a different physical space is an esthetic experience (Szilvia, 2019). Simply being there in the environment, the harmonious attribute of which creates the experience.
@Pkim92733931@KellyMiao4 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO ... and incorporate a field trip. We were also asked to plan a pre- and post-lesson to help students to make connections in their learning from the informal setting and the formal setting.
@Pkim92733931@KellyMiao4 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO That's a great point, Paulis! It is important to take the time to plan a pre-visit and post-visit lesson in order to make the most out of the learning experience. In my Biology course at OISE, my instructor asked us to create an unit plan... (to be continued)
@DrAllisonR @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Navigation effort detracts (Bitros et al., 2010) from concentrating on the museum’s contents.
@DrAllisonR @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Yes, that's right! Games for education must foster the rapid acquisition and use of knowledge by reducing unnecessary cognitive overload that may prevent the distribution of cognitive resources that are necessary for efficient learning. (to be continued)
@Lima970624 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Yes, you are spot on, Li! Being able to interact with the learning material is essential in learning as it allows the learner to have a sense of autonomy (Sylaious et. al, 2017). It helps to take ownership of their learning, instead of feeling "forced" to listen.
@KellyMiao4@MsElliott11 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO @DrAllisonR That's true, I wonder how that's going to change the learning experience for those who are in classes during this isolation period. Based on what we have been discussing in this class, would you make any suggestions to your course instructor? If so, what would they be?
@MsElliott11 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO @DrAllisonR That's a great point, Cristi! It is quite true that some students and even teachers take field trips to museums for granted.
@CarmelLeung @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO Thank you for sharing, Carmel! I like how you explained each word and what they mean to you. I noticed that the words you used are all positive. Would you say that reflect all of your experiences with museum? Why or why not?
@HabeebSafeena@MsElliott11 @eric00337327 @SamShar51775262@TseHillary @teachertalksTO @DrAllisonR Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cristi and Safeena! I totally agree. As mentioned in the article, the ability to zoom in also allows the dialectic between visitors and artefacts not possible in the real-world museum (Sylaiou et. al., 2017).
All in-person undergraduate and research-stream Masters and Doctoral courses at #UofT St. George, @UTSC and @UTM are cancelled as of March 16. More information here: https://t.co/PlZsKIVIQF
The Premier’s Office has announced that it will close all publicly funded schools in Ontario between March 14 and April 5, 2020, in response to #COVID19. As a result, all @Peelschools schools will be closed during that time. 1/X
