23 Eylül 1821’de Tripoliçe’de, Yunan çeteleri savunmasız Türklere karşı tarihin en kanlı sivil katliamlarından birini gerçekleştirdi.

Kadın, çocuk, yaşlı ve bebek demeden binlerce Türk katledildi.

Yunan çetelerinin elebaşı Kolokotronis’in, “Kasabaya girdiğimde atımın ayağı hiç yere değmedi.” şeklindeki sözleri, katliamın boyutunu bir kez daha gözler önüne serdi.

Tarihçi David Howarth, yaşananları şu sözlerle aktardı:

"İki gün içinde, on binlerce Türk’ün yaşadığı şehirde tek bir canlı kalmamıştı. Çoğu; başları, kolları ve bacakları kesilerek öldürülmüştü.

Avrupalılar Türkleri kınarken, barbarlık eden ve katliamı başlatan tarafın Rumlar olduğunu bilmiyorlardı."
