A friend of mine has just recently travelled on the Victoria Falls to @CityofBulawayo road. She took this photo and wrote the following report:

"On a recent trip to Zambia we decided to go through Botswana to avoid the road from Bulawayo to Vic Falls . There are roadworks on either side of the Botswana road and huge trucks and lorries travelling both ways made it a dangerous journey so we decided to return via the Zimbabwe route . Well - that was truly an unspeakable experience . My foremost reaction was one of deep sadness and anger . Sadness because my memory of this route was one of the most beautiful in our country. Anger - because of the danger . Many of our citizens have to make that journey for their livelihoods . Their lives are at risk . Many of our citizens have created incomes from selling their wares along that road to locals and tourists . They are now reduced to poverty and dust - eking out a living by selling firewood . There was evidence of the Teak trees being chopped down on the edges of the road . The appalling , indescribable state of this road is a crime against our planet ."

Another friend who drove down last Tuesday told me that he did not see a single working construction vehicle the entire distance from Victoria Falls.

Zimbabweans are allowed to be suspicious of anything that this ZANU PF govt does. They have a history of being dubious. We were once told there was now a new airline called Zimbabwe Airways run by Mugabe's son-in-law Chikore. They even brought some dilapidated planes from Malaysia. Nothing ever came of it. Those of us who were suspicious of that move were label unpatriotic. When whole thing collapsed, none of these "SUPER-PATRIOTIC MEGAPHONES" aplogized or even gave an explanation. They simply move on to another scheme like GeoPomona....

🔸Air Zimbabwe inherited an airline that had 50 flights a week to Bulawayo in 1980. An air ticket cost $22,40 return. At the weekend, the flight cost $9 each way. This was in local currency.

And where are we now? Celebrating a wet lease? One second-hand plane? Come on. We are bigger than this nonsense of celebrating mediocrity.

Dear @nickmangwana,

I hope you have seen the pictures that have gone viral on social media showing Zimbabweans sleeping outside the Zimbabwean Consulate in Cape Town in winter temperatures running away from xenophobic harassment, hate and violence.

Surely, as a government, you can do something to assist your own people in such circumstances. Imagine, Nick, if it were your wife and children sleeping outside in the Southern African winter, exposed to temperatures close to zero degrees. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.

The government has the resources and the responsibility to intervene. At the very least, these Zimbabweans should not be left to sleep on the pavement in the cold.

Why do we have to be so cruel to our own people? What is the purpose of having a government if it cannot step in when its citizens are in obvious distress? These are the same Zimbabweans who, in better times, send remittances back home that sustain families and contribute significantly to the country’s economy.

I hope you will not simply look at these images and move on. I hope you will bring this matter to the attention of your principals and urge them to act. Sometimes I wonder whether President Emmerson Mnangagwa is fully aware of situations such as this, because I struggle to believe that any sane and compassionate leader could see fellow citizens enduring these conditions and simply carry on as if nothing is wrong.

These people are not mere statistics. They are Zimbabweans. They deserve dignity, compassion, and assistance from the government that claims to represent them.

Zimbabwe is a very difficult place to live if you are just an ordinary citizen trying to get on with your life.

Yesterday, a young man got in touch with me seeking financial assistance to travel to Zimbabwe because he had lost his father. I helped him, and his bus left Johannesburg at 5 p.m. It travelled all the way to Zimbabwe and got to the border in the morning, where it was cleared. It then continued its journey into Zimbabwe.

When the bus got to Bubi, ZIMRA officials, who are Zimbabwe’s customs officials, sent it all the way back to the border for another search.

As I write this, that bus is back at the border. This young man left Johannesburg yesterday at 5 p.m., and it is now past 6 p.m. the following day. He had already done more than half of his journey from Johannesburg, only to be forced back.

I honestly do not understand why our government makes life so painful and difficult for ordinary people. It is cruel, painful, and heartbreaking.

This is one of the reasons many young Zimbabweans do not want to return home when they complete their studies. If you are not part of the political elite circle, life can be incredibly difficult. Even those who are trying to live by the book and simply live normal lives are subjected to unnecessary hardship.

It is heartbreaking. It is sad. The once respected Zimbabwe has become a mafia state.
