Tooling around the Pacific on a KC-10 reserve boondoggle in 2017, we got re-tasked to Yokota AB, Japan, in Tokyo

Normally there’s time to go into the city on the Shinkansen, but we had minimum crew rest. We’d been tasked to bring home the 7 sailors killed on the USS Fitzgerald

There was no formal guidance on how to do it respectfully. There was going to be a break where their shipmates could come and say a final goodbye before they were loaded onboard, then we would continue home to Travis AFB, CA, before they were ultimately sent to the military mortuary at Dover AFB, DE

We did our checklists & mission prep as normal. When it came time to load the sailors, we all exited the aircraft & stood at parade rest in a line some distance away, watching the sailors say their goodbyes to the flag-draped coffins. It seemed like the best thing we could do, giving them their space in a personal moment while trying to show our respect

They eventually left, and we loaded them up. We took care to treat them respectfully & after discovering a mistake in loading, ended up having to re-load them…we were significantly delayed, but it was too important to get it right. In cruise, I walked the cargo deck, thinking about them & how quickly life can end. They knew it was possible, but none of them imagined they’d be coming home under a flag, and they all expected to have a long, happy life. It was undone in moments, as it can be for you & me

Nothing is guaranteed. Be grateful for every moment you have with loved ones & live to the fullest

Most airlines do something like this for service members, but bravo to @AmericanAir for reminding us
